Program Curriculum
Each year, the Beverly Hills Counseling Team works with teachers to determine which skills our students seem to need some additional support in. Conflict resolution is always a skill lacking in the intermediate school. However, in the last couple of years, students seem to struggle more with resolving conflict in positive ways instead of resorting to physical confrontation. All teachers and administration are trained in Restorative Practices and this is very beneficial in many situations. However, students still need the skills to be able to address conflict. As humans, we will never be able to entirely avoid conflict so these skills have life-long applications. The BHI Counselors planned a lesson and incorporated what not to do in a conflict as well as how to handle it in a more effective manner. Before the lesson, we gave the students a pre-test to see their perception on conflict. Counselors delivered the lesson. Then, student got into groups and resolved conflict scenarios using their newly learned skills. At the conclusion of the lesson the students completed a post-test to see if they had any change in opinion. The BHI Counseling Team did notice more students asking for help in mediating conflict instead of going to direct confrontation or even a physical altercation.
Students took a pre-test before the lesson and then took the same test as a post-test. We used their comments to guide us as we created further lessons.
Working with Stakeholders
Positive achievement and growth is only ensured when all stakeholders are working towards the common goal of student success. The Beverly Hills Intermediate Counseling Department recognizes the importance of these relationships and collaborates with teachers, staff, administration, district staff, and parents to ensure this success. To ensure that students are receiving a well-rounded social-emotional education in the areas of interpersonal effectiveness, intrapersonal effectiveness, post-secondary planning and college and career readiness, and personal health and safety, multiple stakeholders assist in the development of the counseling program. Parent meetings are offered throughout the year to enforce the skills being taught within the school. Communication is provided to stakeholders through a weekly newsletter, social media posts, and family events. This collaboration and communication sets Beverly Hills Intermediate students up with skills and tools necessary to gain life-long success in all areas of their lives.
