Use of the Implementation Cycle
During our biannual meetings, the advisory council discussed which areas our students were struggling with the most. Following several years impacted by the COVID pandemic, we were noticing a trend towards more frequent and a higher number of absences for our students. These frequent and prolonged absences were impacting our student's ability to learn and retain academic information. We brainstormed ways we could motivate and incentivize our students to be present more often. Beverly Hills implemented incentives for our students each grading period where attendance was one of the requirements to be able to participate. These incentives were high reward activities that the student's enjoyed being a part of. We also increased our number of home visits for students missing multiple days of school. The counselors held individual attendance conferences with students missing frequently to find out if there were barriers preventing the student from attending and then offered resources to overcome these barriers. Additionally, the staff of Beverly Hills works to make the school culture one of acceptance and compassion so students feel comfortable being in school. As a result of these interventions, BHI was consistently rated one of the top schools in Pasadena ISD for attendance during the 2022-23 school year.
