ATAR Course

Course Description:

In the Japanese Beginners Course, students are provided with the opportunity to develop their linguistic and intercultural knowledge and understanding, and the speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to communicate in Japanese. The topics covered provide contexts in which students develop their communication skills in Japanese and their knowledge and understanding of language and culture.

Through this course, you will develop:

  • skills in effective communication

  • knowledge of the nature of the language

  • understanding of the interdependence of language and culture

In this course, there will multiple opportunities to physically immerse students into the culture through excursions, cultural activity days and cultural immersions with Japanese students in and/or out of Australia.

Main Topics Covered:

The prescribed topics are studied from two interdependent perspectives:

  • The Personal World

  • The Japanese-speaking Communities

Within these perspectives, the following topics are studied:

  • Family life, home & neighbourhood

  • People, places and communities

  • Education and work

  • Friends, recreation and pastimes,

  • Holidays, travel & tourism

  • Future plans & aspirations

Preliminary Course (120 hours):

The topics within the preliminary course provide contexts in which students develop their communication skills in Japanese and their knowledge and understanding of language and culture.

HSC Course (120 hours):

In the HSC course, students will extend and refine their communication skills in Japanese in these contexts, and will gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of language a culture.
