Stage One: Catholic Perspective

Strand: Healthy, Safe and Active Lifestyles

Key Inquiry Question One: How can I be responsible for my own, and others’ health, safety and wellbeing?

Being safe and healthy

God has created a body for all of us. Our bodies are really amazing as they can tell us many things. See Feelings and Emotions

We do have to look after the bodies that God has given us, by eating healthy and being physically active. We all have choices to make everyday and it's important we think before we make choices. It's not best for our teeth and bodies, if we eat too many sweets and soft drinks. Also, eating chips and fast food will make us feel sick. God has given us the a body, so that we can look after it and use it to be a gift to God and others. We can't be a gift to others for example helping Mum and Dad at home, or reading stories to our younger brothers or sisters or cleaning up the mess in our classroom, if we don't look after our bodies and eat healthy, as our bodies won't be able to do all these wonderful generous things.

Other ways God wants us to look after our bodies is brushing our teeth, having baths, washing our hands before we eat, putting sun screen on, taking medication when we are sick. These are wonderful simple ways we can look after our bodies, which is such a wonderful gift that God has given us.

Key Inquiry Question Two: How can I act to help make my environments healthy, safe and active?

Staying safe and playing fair

God has created humans to live in society and we are made for relationships (CCC 1879). There are places that the community and schools have made for play such as the school oval, handball courts, parks, indoor centres and many other wonderful places. It is beneficial that we enjoy these places with our friends and families. God wants us to spend time with others and follow the safety rules, so we can have fun and be healthy and safe together. Having fun and playing fair with each other is an excellent way we can be a gift to each other.

It is our responsibility to act in a safe way and look after each other. If some people don't act safely and follow rules then that puts everyone else in danger too. We can be a great gift to everyone by putting safety first. That means wearing helmets when on our bikes, rollerblades and scooters, wearing our seat belts in the car, playing sport fairly and not dangerously.

Health, wellbeing and prayer

God has given us bodies, so that through our actions and words, we can show God to everyone. We do have to look after the bodies that God has given us, by eating healthy and being physically active.

Physical activity is really good for us, as we are physical beings. We do also have to take care of our health and wellbeing. Sleep, mindfulness and sufficient rest is essential. It is important that our mind is not continually occupied but allowed enough time to recover.

It is also really important that we remember that we are also spiritual persons, so spending time with God in prayer and the sacraments are really important to help us spiritually. Ultimately our relationship with God is what is the best for us and truly gives us peace.

God has given us wonderful gifts in people that can help us in life, such as our parents, teachers, grandparents, and friends. It is really important that we learn and listen to these role models especially our parents because they love us and want what's best for us. Ever since we were babies our parents and family have been a gift to us by cooking for us, reading to us, playing with us, cleaning us and many other important things we need to survive and be happy. We should thank God for our parents and family for all the help they give us.

As we get older we learn things from different people. It used to be our parents and family that were the only people that taught us things when we were very young. Now we learn how to be healthy and safe from different people like; teachers, doctors, people on tv, friends and very importantly still our parents and families.
