Hannah Dory was found outside in a dirty shirt, appearing malnourished and distressed. She referred to the location as 'The castle' and repeatedly shouted, 'They’re gonna kill us' and 'I have to save Mary.' She also resisted assistance from the ambulance.
Hannah's family is struggling because they don’t have enough food during the winter. She asks everyone if they want to go to the castle to find some food. We also find out that Hannah has stayed in a mental hospital before, and she is begging to be released, insisting that she doesn’t need any help
Hannah rushes to get inside and almost grabs the food, but things go wrong when they get caught during their plan to steal it. In the confusion, Mary ends up getting stabbed and dying.
Hannah tells Jordan about her "two different lives" and ends up, what the hospital calls, having an episode. As she transitions to the other world, she has to face her sister dying and Otto dying. The baron decides to save her life, but Hannah doesn't want it since he killed all her friends. Jordan also talks to a girl who reminds him of Hannah, but after he gets to know her, he realizes that she is way different than Hannah, but he’s ok with that.
Hannah meets her new roommate, Sophie, who has very different moods. Sometimes Sophie is really happy, but other times she feels sad and talks about scary things like dying. Hannah also gets to know her caretakers, Margret and Agnes, who are very different from each other. One is happy and cheerful, while the other is dark and sad. While all this is happening, the kingdom is going to war.
After the fight in the kingdom, a guard hits Hannah and draws blood from her, even though the baron said nobody should hurt her, and the baron catches him. Then, in 2023, Sophie finds a way to hurt herself. Indy feels sad and thinks it is his fault because he didn't stop her.
They have a meeting about what happened to Sophie, and Indy says it’s his fault. Then, Hannah goes to see Dr. Nicholas, and they think she should go find her place with Jordan. After the incident, Sophie comes back, but Hannah doesn’t want to go outside. Instead, she decides to go to the castle. At the castle, Hannah gets food for her village, and the Baron gives her some food, but she wants more than just that.
The baron helps Hannah by giving her village food, which makes her life better. He starts spending time in her other life, too. At the same time, Jordan is trying really hard to find out about Hannah’s past. Sadly, Sophie, who is Hannah’s roommate, is really sad and ends up committing suicide after trying many times.
Hannah goes back to the castle, and the sisters help make her look nicer. But then Hannah has a big meltdown. Indy has to go home because his insurance won't pay for him to stay anymore. Dr. Nicholas keeps asking Hannah how she feels about Indy leaving, and she tries to go to the castle, but she can't.
Now Hannah can choose to go to the castle. Jordan meets a girl named Ellie who looks a lot like Hannah at the library. The doctors think Hannah should go out into the world by herself. We discover that Hannah grew up in an orphanage. She gets really upset and has an episode when she sees Jordan with the girl he met at the library.
Hannah asks Jordan about Ellie, and in the hospital, Hannah combines with the other world, but somehow it's about the baron and who he courts, but we never read that the baron is marrying someone other than Hannah, but we only read that Jordan is seeing someone else. Could it be that the castle isn't real and it's just another version of the modern world?
Julianna Belman-Powell comes to visit Hannah, and she says something that supports our theory, “ I know you say you’re a time traveler, Hannah. But do you know what I think? I think it’s easier for you to believe something utterly impossible than it is for you to remember something that you’ve always wanted to forget.” This supports the idea that the castle isn't real and it's just another version of the modern world. Jordan figures out that Hannah lost her whole family, and Jordan tells her this. The castle was never real, and it was just helping her hide her memory of her past. She says. “ What if hiding a thing could be harder than letting it out? Letting it go?” Jordan comes back in the morning, and it's clear Hannah is having a horrible episode. But Jordan thought he had cured her? “My name is Hannah Dory, and I fell in love with my enemy. For a little while, he loved me back. And then he let go. My name is Hannah Dory, and I am free."
Jordan got fired from his internship for telling Hannah about her past. Jordan walks into a cafe. He looks around and notices it's a book club meeting, but he sees a familiar face. It's Hannah. They run up to each other and hug. Hannah sits back down and says, "Listen. I think you might like this story." And she starts her story again from the beginning.
