Unit 1 TESTS will be the first week in October. Review materials are available HERE already. Start studying!
Open the menu below for other vids by other teachers. These videos are NOT required, but do offer a different perspective on the topic if that helps!
The Chemistry Solution - a very brief discussion of what Hess' Law is followed by some really good examples. These are simpler problems, but offer a good basis for figuring out how to use Hess' Law.
Tangerine Education - another example of how to solve for ΔH with Hess' Law.
The Organic Chemistry Tutor - definitely a long video, but they do a great job of explaining Hess' Law more clearly, along with a few examples worked through very slowly and carefully. Easy to follow along with!
Open the menu below for typed content, like in a textbook. Some prefer to learn from reading rather than watching. If that helps you these resources can be useful!
Lumen Learning - a more complete entry on Hess' Law with an example problem.
Socratic - less notes and more a worked out example problem.
Hess's Law is a tool used to calculate the ΔH of a chemical reaction as long as you already have enthalpy data from other, similar reactions. This data can often be looked up in reference materials. This saves you a trip to the lab to make new measurements!
These calcs can be a tough! The math is easy, but the process is complex and similar to the type of work we did balancing REDOX reactions. Be careful!
Like with balancing REDOX reactions, there are a lot of moving parts here! Organization is the key to success!
If you are looking for extra practice check out this site from Widener University.
There is NO lab activity for this section!
To prove mastery of this topic you will need to take a quiz on Schoology. Here are the guidelines:
You must show me all the completed work for this section BEFORE you you can start attempts on this quiz.
You can use any notes, practice, or prior quiz attempts to help you complete the quiz.
You can use ANY class resources like a calculator, your periodic table, or any other reference materials
You have UNLIMITED attempts to take this quiz, but after 4 tries you will need to take a paper version with me in class.
You should only need 2-3 tries for each quiz. If it takes more than that you should be reaching out for help!
You CANNOT work with others on the quizzes
