This week we will get started with cirriclium! The stuff we learn is HERE on my website, and due dates for the WHOLE UNIT are on Schoology.
Video: Classification of Matter Vid
Open the menu below for other vids by other teachers. These videos are NOT required, but do offer a different perspective on the topic if that helps!
Robin Reactions - Another take with some better graphics
Chem Academy - a much longer more detailed explanation of mixtures and pure substances
Open the menu below for typed content, like in a textbook. Some prefer to learn from reading rather than watching. If that helps you these resources can be useful!
LibreText:Chem - a text discussion of classification with a nice flowchart at the end
Saylor Academy - another take on the topic, this time with some practice problems
Resources
Use the link below to access tools to help you in this section. These tools are note required, but typically help a lot by either replacing a big chunks of the notes you need to take and/or with practice and labs. These docs can also usually be used on tests and quizzes.
Classification of Matter Flowchart - This chart makes the process of classifying matter super easy by breaking down the process into multiple small steps. Each step requires you to make a yes or no decision, and has all the needed notes and info to do that easily. Simply walk down the chart step-by-step until you get to the end!
Complete this worksheet for some more traditional practice in classification. Complete this work in your composition notebook! Check here for some selected answers.
Follow the link above to access instructions for the lab activity for this section. Create a table similar to the one in the instructions in your composition notebook and record the classification of at least 20 items in class.
To prove mastery of this topic you will need to take a quiz on Schoology. Here are the guidelines:
You must show me all the completed work for this section BEFORE you you can start attempts on this quiz.
You can use any notes, practice, or prior quiz attempts to help you complete the quiz.
You can use ANY class resources like a calculator, your periodic table, or any other reference materials
You have UNLIMITED attempts to take this quiz, but after 4 tries you will need to take a paper version with me in class.
You should only need 2-3 tries for each quiz. If it takes more than that you should be reaching out for help!
You CANNOT work with others on the quizzes
