School Teacher Co-develops Engineering Graphics and Design App for iPad
Parklands College educator and Head of the Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) department, Thanersen Pillay, together with Digisoft, has developed an iPad App called Iso2Ortho.
This App assists learners with visualizing the surfaces of 3D objects, also known as isometric to orthographic conversion, and is used in the mechanical and architectural industries. Learners need to be skilled in the drawing of orthographic views of their ideas in order to materially realize their ideas.
The App consists of two parts namely a projection tool that allows a learner to see an isometric (3D shape) view and and the top, front, left and right side views. Once the learners have understood the concept of conversion, they can then attempt the second part, a game that allows them to enhance their knowledge of isometric and orthographic projection. The learner is presented with 3D views with multiple-choice questions for them to answer. Bonus points are awarded for correctness and speed. Currently there are 4 progression levels, but plans are already underway to enhance the app and to make the game more challenging for the more advanced user.
This is a Parklands College and Christopher Robin Pre-Primary initiative to develop relevant educational applications for the South African Education market.
