As engineers and architects, can we use our talents and passions to leverage technology to meet our communities needs?
What is accessibility?
Goal: I can pay attention to accessibility designing buildings.
What does it mean to be included? What does it mean to be excluded?
What are accommodations?
Can you identify accommodations you see in your everyday life?
What does accessibility mean?
How are engineers helping make the world more accessible for everyone?
We are going to take a walk around the school and look for signs of the ADA inside and outside of the school.
We might be looking for:
Ramps
braille signs
elevators
curb cuts
handicap parking
alarm lights
lowered door handles
wide entrances
Jot notes or sketch pictures of some design strategies that make our buildings accessible.
Now that we have talked about accessibility, let's convert our crane to an elevator to help make our space more accessible.
You will use the existing LEGO crane you built, and follow the steps on pp. 6–17 in Book 3 of the building instructions to convert the crane into an elevator. (You jumped ahead in EE#3, so yours will have a motor and that's okay.)
How will using an elevator to help make their Boomtown Build accessible?
With your group, brainstorm more ways you could make your building accessible. Make a quick sketch of these additions in your notebook and then build your ideas!
Use your device to take pictures of your progress. You will take pictures after each building addition.
