Students will design and make a cutting board using various tools and materials.
Students will practice detailed design sketching and daily project documentation in their student portfolios
Students will gain experience using the following shop equipment: the laser cutter, miter saw, orbital sander, router, clamps and Ink Scape vector software.
Board Dimensions: Your cutting board must be either greater than 6" x 6" but less than 12" x 14"
Materials: You must use 3-4 types of lumber. (no more, no less)
Design: Your design must include 5-7 cut pieces of wood. For example, your board cannot be 1 piece of walnut, 1 piece of cherry, and 1 piece of maple.
Consider the person for whom you are designing the cutting board. What do they typically cut or eat off of a cutting board? What colors do they like? What does the furniture in their home look like? Your end user will impact the style of your cutting board.
Create a SCALED design sketch of your cutting board. Include color and dimensions. Label materials/details. Write out your cut list on the sketch (see example).
Research: Find and WATCH at least 2 videos or instructions to create your cutting board. Instructables is a great place to start.
Create your project plan (Portal- Topics Page- Templates).
Meet with your MAKE teacher for approval of your project plan.
Make a copy of the cutting board project plan doc (Portal: Topics: Google Docs).
Move the doc to your MAKE folder.
Make a DETAILED project plan AFTER watching videos. Pause videos to help you write your project plan. This should include:
Dimensions (sizes) of EACH piece of wood so you know what to cut.
Types of Wood

Step-by-step plan.
Daily tasks.
Laser engraving allows you to personalize your cutting board with your name, a logo, or a message.
This creates rounded (beveled) edges for a more finished look using the router.
