Project Objective:
Students will design and build a layered wooden holder for at least one 1.5" diameter tea light candle.
Learning Goals:
Students will practice detailed design sketching and daily project documentation in their student portfolios.
Students will gain experience using the following shop equipment: Miter Saw, Drill Press, Orbital Sander, Clamps and Wood Glue
Students will gain experience measuring for precision and finding the center of a shape.
Minimum expectations: single tea light candle holder with dimensions: 3" wide x 3" long x 2.5" tall.
Creative license: Go beyond the minimum and create a candle holder for more than one candle. Maximum dimensions are 8" x 4" x 3.5". Candle holders may not exceed 3 candles.
Choose your wood and number of layers. At minimum you must select two types of wood to layer.
The hole for the tea light candle should be drilled to a depth of .75".
Pass the required online written tool quizzes.
Complete research online of candle holder ideas. Record ideas in student portfolio.
Make a detailed, labeled, and dimensioned sketch of your candle holder on graph paper. USE A RULER AND A SPLAT. Submit your sketch for review and approval. For your sketch use a scale of 2 squares = 1 inch.
Upload approved (teacher initialed sketch to your portfolio page).
5. Attend teacher demonstration of miter saw and drill press machines.
6. Practice with miter saw and drill press machines.
7. Pass miter saw and drill press hands-on tool quizzes.
8. Cut all wood within 1/4" of desired final dimensions of candle holder.
9. Read about using clamps and wood glue.
10. Use wood glue and clamps to glue layers of wood together.
11. Measure and mark center of hole for candles.
12. Communicate with teacher you are ready for candle holes to be drilled.
13. Sand candle holder to desired finish and apply mineral oil SPARINGLY.
Documentation of your project must be made in your student website. This includes, photos, videos, sketches.
Take pictures as you go. At least one or two per class. One of you and one of your materials.
NO SELFIES - it's not safe when operating machines. Have a friend or teacher snap a pic for you.
Final pictures of your completed candle holder must be uploaded to your website.
Complete reflection once your project is complete.
