NEW WORK FOR CREDIT - SUMMER

FINANCIAL LITERACY

Application Deadline: May 30

Approval Process: Students interested in taking the Financial Literacy graduation requirement for new work in the summer must seek approval from Lisa Vartanian, Supervisor of Visual & Performing Arts/21st Century Life & Careers by completing the Financial Literacy New Work Application Form.

Approved Programs: Bergen Community College and Educere. See your school counselor for more information.

MATH COURSES FOR ACCELERATION

Application Deadline: May 30

Approval Process: Any student interested in taking a math course for acceleration must request a meeting - Meeting Request Form - to consult with the S.T.E.M. supervisor to discuss his/her plan and rationale for requesting to take a summer course. If approved at this stage, students will be given and must complete/submit the necessary paperwork with appropriate signatures no later than May 27, 2022.

Course Requirements: Summer math courses for advancement must meet the following criteria:

  • The course title or description must state that the course is designed for advancement, acceleration, new work or original credit.

  • The course curriculum must be designed to cover the concepts of a full-year course for full-year credit. The course must be taken at an accredited high school or college.

  • Once enrolled, students are expected to meet the expectations of the course and receive a passing grade.

  • Upon completion of the course, all students must complete a PHS placement exam to determine placement in math for the following school year. Entrance into an honors level course is contingent upon the student achieving a grade of B+ or better on the exam.

  • Ninth grade students must take the aligning NJSLA exam during the designated testing window as set by the NJ Department of Education (July 25, 2022 - August 5, 2022).

  • The above exams will be administered at Paramus High School between July 25, 2022 and August 12, 2022. The Curriculum Office will reach out to students in July to schedule any necessary exams.


IMPORTANT NOTES

Completion Dates: All summer advancement courses must be completed no later than mid-August.

Tuition/Fees: Parents/guardians are responsible for all associated tuition, costs and fees.

Official Records: An official transcript must be received by the Office of School Counseling upon completion of all new work. If the student receives a passing grade, the course title, credits and grade earned will be added to their PHS transcript.

Limitations: College courses or courses taken outside of PHS as part of any special programs during the year cannot be used for credit toward high school graduation unless they are part of a Board-approved program outlined in this Program of Studies.
