COURSE PLANNING

School counselors will meet with each student individually to review graduation requirements, explore elective offerings and the alignment, and discuss the alignment of the course of study with student interests and goals. These course planning conferences will occur between late January and mid-March.

TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS

Course level recommendations are based on the assessment of our professional faculty. Students are encouraged to speak with their current teachers regarding placement recommendations and course options prior to meeting with the school counselor.

INCOMING FRESHMEN

Placements for English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies are determined through the utilization of multiple, specific, educationally-related and objective criteria in placement rubrics. A rubric has been developed for each subject area and will be available in late February.

MAPPING A 4-YEAR PLAN

Students are encouraged to outline and plan a course of studies that is academically stimulating, personally enriching, and prepares them for higher education. Graduation requirements will provide a solid foundation, but students should look to go above and beyond the general requirements while taking appropriately rigorous coursework (i.e., the most challenging the student can handle without creating an undue burden). Students are advised to track their progress toward meeting graduation requirements and plan ahead by outlining a four-year course plan for college and career readiness.

PREPARING FOR POST-SECONDARY PLANNING

Whether preparing for college or a career, a strong academic foundation is critical for any individual to be competitive. College admission counselors will expect a student’s high school record to demonstrate academic rigor, and quality of academic performance.

Visit the Graduation Requirements page for an overview of the coursework recommended for building a strong transcript for college admissions. Considering the vast number of institutions of higher learning and the wide variety of admissions standards, it is best to consult college websites for specific school and program requirements. Consult with your school counselor and the admission offices for additional information.
