EXEMPLAR
My Mana Tane is my koro. He has short, silver hair that shines in the sun and kind brown eyes that always look like they are smiling. He is tall and strong, and he likes to wear his old rugby jersey with black shorts and jandals. His hands are rough from working in the garden, but they are gentle when he gives me a hug.
My koro loves fishing. Every weekend he takes his fishing rod down to the wharf. Sometimes he catches a big snapper and sometimes nothing at all, but he never gives up. He also likes to eat kaimoana, especially pipi and mussels that we collect together at the beach. One thing he never eats is sushi—he says raw fish belongs in the sea, not on his plate!
The best times are when we go out on his little boat together. I like sitting beside him while he tells me funny stories about when he was young. Sometimes we sing waiata while we wait for the fish to bite. When I am with my koro, I feel safe, happy, and proud. He is my Mana Tane because he is brave, caring, and always there for me.
