Cultivating Kaitiakitanga: Paparore School's Arbor Day Event at Lake Ngatu
Today Paparore School's annual Arbor Day event at Lake Ngatu showcased their deep commitment to our environment. Year after year, they continue to plant native trees and plants, demonstrating their dedication as caretakers/kaitiaki of our taiao. With an impressive tally of approximately 40,000 trees planted since 1999, Paparore School is making a significant impact.
Working together with Ngāi Takoto Taiao Kaimahi, Summit Forest, and the Bushlands Trust, Paparore School undertook a big task today, planting over 1400 native trees. This effort perfectly aligns with the schools core values of Porihanga (community) and Kaitiakitanga (environmental stewardship) while enriching their local community curriculum.
Lake Ngatu holds immense significance within the community, and Paparore School wholeheartedly embraces the role of kaitiaki, or guardians, of this precious environment. The day's activities were made even more meaningful with the invaluable support of their whānau, including parents, siblings, and grandparents.
Through their continuous efforts, they inspire and empower future generations to manaaki and tiaki our natural environment, our taiao.
"Manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua."
If we take care of the earth, if we take care of the people, we will take care of the future.
Keep up the amazing mahi Paparore
term 2 - week 7 - assessment
We know science is all around us. Everything we do and see is related to science. We have been learning to understand what biology, chemistry and physics are. This assessment will check in with what you think Science looks like and how you can explain it.
Karawhiua - Give it a go!
term 2 - week 6 - physics - magic magnets
magnets
WALT about magnetic fields and exploring the attractive and repulsive forces between magnets.
Explore what happens between different magnets and paperclips.
Observe how they are attracted or repelled by the magnets.
Discussion - What did you see? What did you discover? Why do you think that happened?
Magnets have two poles, a north pole and a south pole, and opposite poles attract while like poles repel.
term 2 - week 4 - turtle release
WALT understand the threats that turtles face in their environment.
WALT comprehend watch we watch and what we read using our literacy skills.
Watch both videos ...
Write down the names of the turtles that were released in each video?
Name the beach in the Far North where one of the turtle's was released.
What are some of the threats that turtle's face?
Who works together to release these turtles back to their habitat?
Open the turtle korero, choose a page to read with a buddy.
term 2 - week 3 - science recap
biology
Biology is the study of living things like plants, animals, and even us humans! It helps us understand how living things are made, how they grow, and how they interact with each other and their environment.
We can learn about different types of animals and plants, how they live and how they survive. Biology also teaches us about ourselves, including our organs, bones, and how they all work together to keep us healthy.
chemistry
Chemistry is all about different substances and how they act and interact with each other. Everything around us, like the air we breathe, the water we drink, and even the food we eat, is made up of different chemicals.
In chemistry, we can learn about the different properties of these substances, such as their colours, smells, and how they change when they mix together.
PHYSICs
Physics is all about understanding how things move, why objects fall to the ground, and how forces work. It helps us explain why a ball bounces, why a car moves, and even why the Earth goes around the Sun!
In physics, we can learn about different types of energy, like light and sound, and how they travel. We also learn about gravity, which keeps us grounded, and how different forces affect objects in motion.

what does a blog post need?
Seaweek 2023
We are learning how to look after our marine environment and the threats faced due to pollution.
Tags - Topic, Kaitiakitanga, Seaweek
DLO - Add 3-5 photos from our Seaweek trip to Coopers Beach to your post.
DLO - Embed the Google slide deck into your blog post (Whaea Deb will teach you how to do this)
Check your spelling and punctuation.
Seaweek is an opportunity to raise awareness about human impact and what we can do to look after and protect our seas.
As an island nation, we have a deep connection with the sea. Approximately 75% of people in New Zealand live within 10 kilometres of the coast.

week 8 - create
CREATE a Sea Week Title Page.
Be creative with the background, font and pictures/ photos.
Add at least 3 interesting things you have learnt from the website to your google slide.
Include at least 3 pictures
Look at the exemplars from last year for INSPIRATION.
This template is in your 'MY DRIVE' in the TOPIC folder!
week 4/5 - biology - living things
Ruud Kleinpaste is known as The Bugman. He is an expert in environmental education, championing biodiversity and biosecurity and citizen science.
The Bugman visited our school last year and taught us about why bugs are SO GOOD!!!
We are going to go on a bio blitz to investigate the biodiversity that exists in our school!
I wonder questions ...
Why are there so many cicada shells by the trees on the field?
What makes an insect and insect?
Ākonga will be able to observe and investigate with cicadas.
Ākonga will understand the essential characteristics of an animal for it to be an insect: 3 body regions (head, thorax-all legs are attached to this, abdomen), 3 pairs of legs, and one pair of antennae. Some insects have wings.
Ākonga will be able to make predictions and collect data.

week 3 - physics - cyclone gabrielle
Cyclone Gabrielle tore through NZ leaving devastation especially on the East Coast of NZ near Gisborne and in the Hawkes Bay.
We are going to look at some photos and learn about why a cyclone can cause so much damage!
Lets talk about the movement of a cyclone? How does it move and cause so much damage? We are going to have a go to make a cyclone in a bottle!
week 2 - introduction to science
What is SCIENCE? What do you know about SCIENCE?
Brainstorm in groups - lets share our ideas.
Science is all around us. There are many areas of learning in Science. We are going to be learning about three areas of Science. Do you know what they might be?
Look at the mystery bags and discuss with your group. What do you notice? What is similiar about the items?
