Achievement Standard Physical Education 90964 v 2: Demonstrate quality movement in the performance of a physical activity
Level: 1
Resource Title: Play Ball
Credits: 3
Achievement
Demonstrate quality movement in the performance of a physical activity.
Achievement with Merit
Consistently demonstrate quality movement in the performance of a physical activity.
Achievement with Excellence
Consistently demonstrate high quality movement in the performance of a physical activity.
Student Instructions
This assessment activity requires you to participate in games of Volleyball and consistently demonstrate high quality movement. Following the game, you will use the Self Assessment Sheet for Volleyball to assess your participation (refer to Resource 1).
Throughout the teaching and learning programme your teacher will observe your game play and assess you according to the criteria outlined on the Self Assessment Sheet.
This assessment activity includes two tasks.
Task 1 Collection of evidence
1. Participate in a number of Volleyball games.
2. Following games use the Self Assessment Sheet for Volleyball (Resource 1) to assess your performance.
You will self assess against the criteria when you first start, twice throughout the unit of work and once at the end of the unit. Your teacher will verify your judgments.
The five areas you need to consider include movement off the ball, ball skills, defensive skills, offensive skills, and team play. For each of these areas, tick the appropriate box that best indicates your performance in the game.
Your teacher will observe your game play and assess you according to the same criteria. Your final grade will be the decision of your teacher based on their observation of your participation, as well as the self- and peer-assessments that you provide.
Achievement Standard Physical Education 90967 v 2: Demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and describe the outcomes
Level: 1
Resource title: Move to Improve
Credits: 3
Achieved
Demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and describe the outcomes.
Achievement with Merit
Demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and describe, in depth, the outcomes.
Achievement with Excellence
Demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and describe, comprehensively, the outcomes.
Student Instructions
This assessment activity requires you to practice and improve your Volleyball.
During this time you will identify what you want to improve about your performance and how you will be able to do this, i.e. what strategies you will use and demonstrate.
You must demonstrate and describe the outcome of two different strategies to improve your performance. One must be a technique.
What you choose to work on will depend on you finding out what you can already do (your current performance and/or ability), what you need to improve, and choosing the strategy that will provide the best opportunity for you to do this.
The assessment will take place over three weeks, using in-class and out-of-class time.
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and to describe the outcomes of their use.
Start with this point
Mr Borland filmed our initial volleyball performance. As a class we counted the amount of points won through setting the ball up and spiking. We also counted the amount of points won through unforced errors. What we found is that all of our points were won by........
It is much better winning forced points because......... (explain)
A strategy we used to win more forced points was to change the rules of the game. The rule we changed was.........(explain)
The outcome of changing the rules was that........ (explain)
When we watched our first game the movement around the court could be described by.........
When we compare that to the professionals match the difference was.........
By understanding how to move the games changed by .... explain the changes in the movement
Describe your technique in your initial Volleyball spike
Consider Principles of
1. As many muscles and joints as possible
2. Order - big to small
3. Timing
4. Use full range of motion in joints
5. Fully extend in follow through phase
Broad base of support
lower center of gravity
Center line going through the base of support
Compensation
Height of release
Angle of release
Speed
Gravity
Spin (magnus effect)
What were you doing well. What were you not doing well in terms of your spike
Explain the strategy that you used to improve your technique in your spike.
Consider that you watched a pro spiking and looked at their technique. You also went out with a partner and practiced throwing the ball up and spiking against the cage. (practice makes perfect)
Explain the outcomes to improving your spike through practice. How has it affected performance in the recent games we have played? Consider the points you win, also consider taonga. When you work as a team to come up with a strategy, implement the strategy. Does this make you feel more connected to your peers? How do you feel when you set a ball up for a teammate? Is this more enjoyable for you then playing as a individual?
Explain the results from your observation
- Movement ( were you moving to the net on attack) Describe the movement of the pros and then describe and explain the lack of movement by the Papakura high students. What advantages are there when the players have more movement around the court?
- Legal/illegal (how many of your shots were illegal)
Points won by good set up and finding space/ points won through unforced errors
- Correct decision/ incorrect decision (How many of your points were won by the other team committing an unforced error compared to how many of your points were won by a good set up and spike)
For each of these explain what you should be doing
What have you been doing to improve your decision making skills?
Discuss how we changed the rules . Explain these new rules- we did this to take away the skill from the game
This made the game more about good decision making, strategy and movement around the court
What are the outcomes of playing this game?
Explain how we reduced the game to a 2 vs 2 battle
Explain the affect this had on your footwork around the court.
Watch the Olympic match. Pause the points each time the setter sets and the spike is executed.
Keep a tally on how many options each setter had to spike for each point
keep a tally on where on the court the spiking was being executed. Either outside left. outside right, right, left or middle.
Do this for a minimum of 30 spikes
Explain the difference in what you see in relation to this between the pro's and your own game
What are the outcomes of implementing the strategies learnt from the olympic match
Describe your technique in your initial Volleyball serve that was recorded
Consider Principles of
1. As many muscles and joints as possible
2. Order - big to small
3. Timing
4. Use full range of motion in joints
5. Fully extend in follow through phase
Broad base of support
lower center of gravity
Center line going through the base of support
Compensation
Height of release
Angle of release
Speed
Gravity
Spin (magnus effect)
What were you doing well. What were you not doing well in terms of your serve
Explain the magnus effect and how it effects the ball in the volleyball ball
Are you using the magnus effect for positive outcomes in your serve
Film yourself performing the serve using all the knowledge of technique you have learnt
Compare the video on vidalyze to your initial performance
What are the outcomes of learning and implementing proper technique
