In Tokyo, Japan, from 25 November to 01 December, we represented Thailand and Panyaden International School at the Be The Change (BTC) conference, organised by the Design for Change (DFC) movement. The event brought together young changemakers from across the globe to share innovative projects aimed at creating a positive impact on our world.
During our stay, we explored Japanese culture, visiting the Miraikan Science Museum (National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation) and the historic Meiji Shrine. We explored old areas of the city, including Senso-ji temple in Asakusa and were caught in the hustle and bustle of Shibuya crossing.
The main part of the trip was presenting our Service Learning projects on stage. I presented about bird conservation in front of a crowd and answered many questions from the audience. The other students presented at the World Expo, where they showcased their projects alongside other delegations from other nations. We listened to inspiring stories of action from countries worldwide, exchanging ideas on how youth can drive meaningful change.
The BTC event emphasised collaboration, creativity, and empathy. For the Panyaden team, this was the first international trip for our school. Beyond presenting our projects on a world stage, the journey became a celebration of cultural discovery and a reminder that young changemakers everywhere hold the power to transform communities.

Dear Panyaden Community,
As we approach the midpoint of the academic year, we can look back on some of the Dhamma work that has taken place at our School so far. We have been fortunate not only to have been visited by our spiritual advisors, Venerables Ajahn Jayasaro and Ajahn Jiew, and to learn from their wisdom and guidance, but also to have welcomed Sister Jayavira to our community. These visits from the Buddhist monastic community have been a source of inspiration for those of us devoted to the path of Dhamma practice, reminding us of where this path can lead and how we might skilfully face the challenges of life.
In Term 1, Panyaden staff attended the annual meditation retreat to deepen their Dhamma practice, an essential part of how we seek to embody Buddhist principles in our personal and professional lives. Parents and guardians have likewise been able to join weekly guided meditation sessions, and we were pleased to host a communication workshop for staff led by Ajahn Jiew to further support mindfulness and wisdom in daily interactions. This term also marked the first time that a group of Year 12 students spent time at Wat Pa Yen Boon, Ajahn Jiew’s forest monastery, to gain a first-hand experience of monastic life.
Of course, there have also been challenges and difficulties for us all, both individually and collectively. These challenges are not deviations from life; they are life itself, and can offer powerful reminders of the Noble Truth of suffering and the reality that much of life lies beyond our control. What we can control is how we respond to these challenges, and this is where a consistent practice of Dhamma and meditation becomes invaluable.
Looking ahead to Term 2, we are pleased to announce plenty of opportunities for practice and reflection. Ajahn Jayasaro will once again visit Panyaden on Friday, 23 January, and Sister Jayavira will likely return at the end of January. Our weekly guided meditation will continue on Tuesday mornings. If you wish to join these sessions, please use this Line group link. We are also pleased to introduce a new Dhamma Practice and Discussion Programme on Friday mornings from 08:30–09:20 facilitated by Kru Max. For further details, please refer to this link. To sign up to this new programme, please fill out this Google Form.
Finally, we are delighted to announce the annual Parent Meditation Retreat, led by Ajahn Jiew, at Wat Pa Yen Boon from February 12–15. We will send further information, including registration details, after the break. For now, please save the date if you would like to participate in this wonderful opportunity to deepen your practice.

A huge thank you to all the Year 7 families who joined us on Thursday to celebrate the learning journey of the Year 7 Social Studies class. Students had been preparing a presentation on a religious tradition of their choice, exploring how that tradition answers existential questions, how it has adapted over the course of history, and what we might learn from it and apply in our own lives. They were excited to share their learning with a real-life audience.
Although it was challenging to host more than 70 people in one room whilst having multiple presentations taking place simultaneously, the students rose to the occasion. I left the room with a strong sense of muditā—sympathetic joy in the success of others—in appreciation of the hard work and thoughtful learning demonstrated by many Year 7 students.
I look forward to another term of learning and exploration.
