AVSELPA Positive Behavior Intervention Handbook

"Preferences do not necessarily equate to effective reinforcers. Rewards are only reinforcers if they increase student behavior."

The purpose of this handbook is to assist school staff in providing Positive Behavior supports and services for students with behaviors that are challenging in the school system. It represents many years of research and experience in assisting students to acquire and use social behaviors that enable them to access school successfully and to experience positive interpersonal relationships with others in all life settings. Here are some of the documents that can be accessed in this handbook:

  • Behavior document instructions, samples and forms, including the SELPA's FBA template, BIP form and Behavior Emergency Report form.

  • General Strategies for Teaching or Increasing Positive Replacement Behaviors (PRB)

  • Strategies by 4 Behavior Functions (Sx4BF)

  • Preference Assessments: Interview, Observation and Trial Based Methods

  • Fast Facts on Data Collection via Direct Measurements of Behavior

  • Behavior Plan Implementation Checklist

Additional documents and related trainings can be found on Handouts page and Brief Presentations & Trainings page.

This document is a game changer and can assist you not only in identifying Functionally Equivalent Replacement Behaviors (FERBs), but can also assist you in writing your behavior goals. This document is also found within the SELPA's PBI Handbook.
