This course is designed with emphasis on developing communication skills in contexts relevant to contemporary life. Culture is presented directly in cultural notes and video segments, and indirectly through the written and oral exercise program. At the end of this course, students will be able to:
Use French to express themselves verbally and in writing;
Employ elementary structures in everyday life situations which require a simple exchange of information, such as daily interactions, comparing and contrasting people with regard to their likes, dislikes, and possessions;
Extrapolate the main themes and ideas from authentic French discourse, presented verbally or in writing, using key words and scanning techniques;
Find uses for French outside the classroom that validate learning French as an enjoyable and enriching experience; and locate France and other major French-speaking areas on a map and discuss basic differences and similarities between French and American cultures.

They will learn to conduct creative conversations correctly and write simple compositions using statements, questions, negations, and commands. They will apply grammatical structures such as the futur proche, passé récent, passé composé, imparfait, and the placement of object pronouns. Students are expected to acquire new vocabulary terms and review known ones through daily practice. By the end of the year they will also know how to use common irregular verbs and their derivatives. Last but not least, cultural information will be shared in various contexts from an intercultural point of view; students are encouraged to think like responsible world citizens.

2. Speak and understand simple Italian, spoken at moderate speed, in simple conversations on topics of everyday life at a level appropriate for first semester students. (what they do every day, what they are doing
right now, what they did yesterday/last week/last month/last year.)
3. Write sentences with simple syntax (with a variety of regular, irregular, and reflexive verbs) in past and present perfect.
4. Identify and understand some Italian customs and compare and contrast them to the cultural characteristics of their own culture (holidays, food, Italian regional customs).

3. Exhibit some knowledge of Italian culture
and beliefs through the readings of contemporary works about Italian culture or topics such as food, tourism, fashion, customs and society, school and family.
4. Plan an Italian dinner, cook it and present it in video form to the class.
5. The students will plan a 4-week trip to Italy on a $2,500 budget. They will provide an itinerary, the youth hostels they plan to visit, and work/job opportunities They will also research transportation options.

Writing original compositions, summaries, critiques, resumes, book reports, and plays. Reading important works of the foreign language literature. Reporting on selected topics in music, art, architecture, science, politics, and social problems.
Reporting on aspects of style and expression.
Developing note taking skills in the target language.

This class concludes the four-year sequence of the Italian Language and Culture course offered. Completion of Levels 1-3 of
Italian or a teacher evaluation is required. The course offers students the opportunities to demonstrate their proficiency across the three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. It takes a holistic approach to language proficiency.
Students learn language structures in context and use them to convey meaning. The course promotes both fluency and accuracy in language use and doesn’t overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication. The class also engages students in an exploration of culture in both contemporary and historical contexts. The following are the six AP themes that are covered: Contemporary Life, Personal and Public Identities, Global Challenges, Science and Technology, Families and Communities, and Beauty and Aesthetics.

The class is taught completely in Spanish. The course begins with grammatical explanations followed by reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities. Students move from basic Spanish knowledge to writing essays, making presentations, and using critical thinking skills. This course gives students the necessary tools to continue to Spanish for Native Speakers II and AP Spanish.
For the UC/CSU system, successful completion of this course meets the 2-year minimum World Language (E) requirement. However, students are highly encouraged to enroll in Spanish 2 for Native Speakers.

This class is taught completely in Spanish. The course moves the native speaker to more advance skills in reading, writing, presentations, and using critical thinking skills. Students explore and analyze a variety of social, political, and historical issues using a multitude of sources including film, music, art, literature, news articles, and primary documents.
Upon successful completion of this class, students are encouraged to continue their studies by enrolling in AP Spanish Language and Culture.

The course is based on a function-oriented approach combined with a grammar sequence to achieve proficiency in an efficient way. The course will expand students’ ability to comprehend and carry on a topical conversation in basic Spanish, developing
students’ skills in a meaningful manner. Honors Spanish 2 focuses on reading, conversation, grammar and writing. Special emphasis is placed on the acquisition of topical vocabulary, idioms and structures appropriate for a function-oriented approach. The course will expand students’ ability to comprehend, converse and express their ideas in writing. Students will be introduced to numerous cultural aspects from the past and present of the Spanish-speaking world, such as literature, music, geography, history, and art.

The major goal of the course is to provide students with greater opportunities to fine-tune the communication skills acquired in Spanish 1 and 2. Thematic and lexical topics will serve as an extension of those of the first two levels. The course will provide plentiful opportunities to develop oral-aural facility in Spanish, to listen to native speakers, to practice reading about cultures and beliefs of Spanish speaking people in different areas of the world. The course will foment students’ ability to write short paragraphs and discuss various topics relevant to their program.
Honors Spanish 3 serves as an extension of Honors Spanish 2 and will continue to focus on the developing and acquisition of new vocabulary, grammar structures, idioms and conversational skills. Special emphasis will be placed on the introduction of samples of the best literary works of Spanish speaking authors of the 20th and 21st Century. Students will be exposed to political debates in Spanish on current political events and will have to utilize Spanish web sites to collect information for their reports and presentations.

The AP Spanish Literature and Culture course features six course themes which provide a meaningful basis for:
• making connections between different genres, periods and movements:
• introducing materials that will help students understand the larger contexts in which the works were created (literary, historical, sociocultural, and geopolitical) and makes interdisciplinary connections: and
• facilitating the incorporation of other art forms such as painting, photography, cinema, and music into the teaching of literature.
The six themes covered are: Societies in Contact, Construction of gender, Duality of being; Interpersonal Relations, Literary Creation, and Time and Space.
The major emphasis of this course is to:
• Provide the lexical, grammatical, and reading content of Advanced Placement Literature AB, as defined by the College Board.
• Develop further aural comprehension, fluency in speaking, and ability to read at sight, with comprehension, prose and verse passages of moderate difficulty and mature content; and to provide opportunities for reading and analysis of selected major works representative of the principal genres and major trends and periods in literature.
• Provide for discussion of literary values and to offer an opportunity to express reactions and opinions in speech and writing.
