Advanced students will have the opportunity to explore their own creative ideas with the freedom to choose and develop their own projects, and will be introduced to more advanced and specialized ceramic techniques and materials. Students interested in this course should have a strong work ethic, and be motivated to further develop their own talent. They should also feel comfortable being a leader and mentor to other students that could benefit from their experience.

This course will be taught in accordance with California Learning Standards and is an introduction to the techniques of working with wet and dry color media and materials as well as exploring the many creative aspects involved with drawing and painting. Pencil, charcoal, watercolor, tempera and acrylic paints are introduced, as well as chalk and oil pastels, colored inks, and various mixed media techniques. Fundamentals are stressed in this course.

Students interested in Advanced Drawing and Painting will have already demonstrated their proficiency by taking Drawing A/B and/or by taking outside art classes and submitting a portfolio for review. Advanced students will have the opportunity to experiment with various art materials such as pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, acrylic, watercolor, gauche and oil paints, print making, and monoprints. Students will begin to develop their own style. Students in this class must have a strong work ethic and be curious and self-motivated. This course is a great opportunity to discover your voice and hone new skills. This class will prepare you for AP Art and Design. Advanced Drawing and Painting will only be possible with prior approval of the teacher.

The AP Art and Design program consists of three different courses and AP Portfolio Exams—AP 2-D Art and Design, AP 3-D Art and Design, and AP Drawing Art and Design —corresponding to college and university foundations courses. Students may choose to submit any or all of the AP Portfolio Exams. Students create a portfolio of work to demonstrate inquiry through art and design and development of materials, processes, and ideas over the course of a year. Portfolios include works of art and design, process documentation, and written information about the work presented. In May, students submit portfolios for evaluation based on specific criteria, which include skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas and sustained investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision, guided by questions.

Photography 1 asks students to explore the

ever-expanding world of photographic visual communication. Students are introduced to black and white film, processing and printing, digital cameras, digital image capturing, scanning and manipulation. Students are asked to bring an open mind, a 35mm film camera (if possible), and a digital camera (if possible). If students are not able to provide their own camera, cameras will be provided for them through a checkout program. Photography 1A engages students with the power of images in todays society. Students use 35mm film cameras to shoot rolls of black and white film for development and print. Digital photography will be introduced to produce a variety of creative assignments. Photo assignments include environmental portraits, urban landscape, fashion, photo series in addition to self-portraits. Through these engaging assignments, students will learn about the elements and principles of art. In addition each student is required to write a gallery report after viewing a photography show at a museum or gallery.

This advanced course is designed for students who have made a personal commitment to learning the art of photography. Both this class and subsequent semester classes are

dedicated to advancing students' skill levels

through learning alternative printing, using large format cameras and film. Student will produce a rigorous photojournalism project, which will require advanced use of digital cameras and production with software such as Adobe Photoshop. Students will be engaged in refining their own portfolios as a result of required projects. Students will be exposed to the career

possibilities photography has to offer.  Invited guest lecturers who are professionals in the field will share their experience with students.

This course is a college level course that will engage students with the photographic techniques needed to produce a photographic portfolio. Students will submit a portfolio to the AP College Board  to receive college credit for the course. Students will be selected by the photography teacher through a portfolio submission and personal interview. Students will continue to develop their portfolios to demonstrate skills and ideas developed, refined, and applied throughout the course to produce visual compositions. Portfolios are evaluated based on standardized scoring descriptors aligned with skills and understanding developed in college foundation courses.

This course is scheduled during zero period. All levels of singers are welcome to create a mixed voice choir. Students develop vocal technique through performing diverse choral repertoire.

This course develops a student’s ability to sing with considerable skill, accuracy, and sensitivity. Skills are increased in breathing techniques, control of tone quality, and in sight singing. This course also provides for increased skill in ensemble singing in small groups and enhances student’s acquaintance with the study of standard choral literature of varying degrees of difficulty.

of multiple dance forms, including but not limited

They will develop a working knowledge of dance terminology and vocabulary and will be guided into being able to apply this language to their growing kinesthetic repertoire. Students will learn the essentials needed to begin playing acoustic guitar. Students will learn an easy approach to playing quickly, through a combination of exploring the instrument, performance technique, and basic music theory.

The course provides students with an easy-access foundation that will get students playing. Material will be presented in stages, in a way that allows students to grasp the basics of the instrument and music. Students will also learn to develop correct technique and apply theory concepts to their playing. They will have the foundational knowledge necessary to play in a small recital setting.

Music Appreciation is designed to help students cultivate an appreciation for many types of music by developing informed listening skills. This course is a listening class intended to introduce students to a multitude of styles, genres and historical periods of music. Students will learn how to effectively listen to gain a greater appreciation for the art. The course familiarizes students to the history and theory of music. This course explores the historical, cultural, social and personal context of music from each period. As students discover music of old, they will compare it to their personal music choices of today. The class covers music theory and early musical forms of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic Eras, in addition modern musical traditions since 1900 including Jazz, Rock, Folk, and Electronic Music.

Chamber Orchestra is the most advanced instrumental music experience offered at PCHS. The orchestra is open to woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings. It is a year-long course for students who are interested in participating in a chamber orchestra through both performance and academic content. Largely, it is a performance-based class designed for students with at least 2 years experience on a chamber orchestra instrument (violins, violas, cellos, bass, oboes, flutes, trumpets, horns, clarinet, timpanist, and bassoon). 


Major music periods will be rehearsed, analyzed, and performed. Music theory and music history are components of this class. The orchestra will perform at festivals, concerts, and community events throughout the year. Attendance at performances is a required portion of the class.

A background in music is preferred, but not required.

Wind Ensemble is Pali’s most advanced wind and percussion group. In this course students will learn woodwind, brass, and percussion instrumental skills. Students will develop performance abilities by playing music at the 4-6 level. Preference in admission to the class is given to upperclassmen. Wind Ensemble rehearsals include instrumental skill development, exposure to musical style periods, reading and notating music, listening, and communicating during rehearsal activities, analyzing/evaluating individual parts, and practice outside of class for outside the classroom performances. The Wind Ensemble performs throughout the year at concerts and adjudicated festivals.

This course is a workshop for students interested in the performing arts. Experience in the performing arts is not necessary. Each participant works at his or her own level without comparison to fellow students’ talents. Throughout the semester, students will actively practice writing, reading, speaking, critical thinking, and listening skills to accomplish performance goals. These performance goals cover different theatrical topics such as acting technique, audition technique, theatre etiquette, theatre history, pantomime, improvisation, voice, movement, musical theater, character development, storytelling, script writing, script analysis, stage direction, stage design, theatrical criticism, professions and vocabulary. Lecture, discussion, literature, reading, writing, theatrical games, student skits and direction of showcases will be used to teach these topics. Group cooperation, relationship and responsibility to others, confidence, and creativity will be improved by speaking and performing in front of an audience.

This class gives the student the tools for creating effective improvisation and an introduction to basic comic technique. Through traditional and contemporary comedy and improvisation exercises the student will begin to understand the difficult concepts of humor and spontaneous thinking. The class will focus on overall structure and emphasize the basics of good improvisational technique. The student will be exposed to games and exercises created by

Viola Spolin, The Groundlings, and Upright Citizens Brigade. The student will also be exposed to sketch work by such greats as Abbot & Costello, Monty Python, SCTV, SNL, Key and Peele, etc.


Upon completion of the course students should

have knowledge of the history of comedy and improvisation and where it stands as an art-form in our current culture. In terms of performance, students will learn the importance of relying on your partner, listening, and commitment.

Advanced Drama teaches students how to understand and utilize the tools of the performing arts. In-depth study of drama, acting theory, theatre history, writing, directing and producing will be emphasized. Specific theatrical styles will be addressed as well as techniques including but not limited to: improvisation, mime, comedy, drama, musical performance and experimental theatre. The theme of this course is social engagement, and students will learn how to use drama to reflect and impact our world. Students will study current trends in performance, participate in live, video and radio productions as well as explore the technical aspects of producing, scriptwriting, designing, editing etc. They will experiment with spoken word, and create an original play for community performance as well as perform in the various traditional performance styles. Advanced Drama supports students in discovering the performing arts’ potential for shining a light on the human condition and how that light creates relevance and impacts our society.

This course covers performance skills as well as artistic, technical, managerial, and financial elements of theatrical and live event production. Students will assume positions of responsibility on select Pali productions as a semester project, such as the Fall Play and Spring Musical, and will have an opportunity to participate in several types of artistic events. The course prepares students for eventual involvement in the professional theatre world.

Stage Craft and Stage Design students work directly with the Theater Production class designing multiple stage productions at Pali including the Fall Play and the Spring Musical. Live performers, designers, actors, directors, stage managers, producers, technical artists, writers, dancers and industry professionals collaborate to develop and design several types of artistic events in the fields of drama, music, dance and media. They will learn to navigate the technical, managerial, and financial elements of a dramatic production with an emphasis on programming and construction. This course prepares students who are interested in the professional theatrical design and production world.

This course is an extensive study of advanced musical theater performance. Students will actively engage in advancing their acting, singing and dance skills and the synthesis of these talents into professional musical theater readiness. They will be trained to approach character, scene, text, and song analysis from an academic standpoint and integrate this into their live performances. They will be taught the history, theories, vocabulary, and constructs of theater, voice and dance, specific to the study of musical theater. These young artists will participate in workshops, in-class exercises, professional work sessions/master classes and performances and will learn to observe, analyze and then put into writing the findings from their individual course of discovery. The course is appropriate for advanced artist as well as those who need to focus on improving a sector of their musical theater skill set.
