By focusing on this Poutama we can develop our very own comprehensive Rautaki Reo Māori that emulates respect for our practices as Māori. Our moemoea is for our tamariki to participate as valuable members of support for not only the whānau but hapū and the wilder community.
Here are key areas our Kura will strive towards:
Needs Assessment: Understand the specific needs and goals related to promoting and integrating Te Reo Māori within our Kura environment. This involves assessing current language proficiency levels, cultural competencies, and community expectations.
Commitment and Leadership: Gain commitment and support from Board of Trustees, Staff and Advisories within our learning community. Leadership buy-in is crucial for allocating resources, setting priorities, and establishing a culture that values and supports Rautaki Reo Māori initiatives.
Cultural Competence Development: Provide professional development opportunities for staff to enhance their understanding of Māori culture, language, and protocols. This includes workshops, cultural immersion experiences, and ongoing learning opportunities.
Partnerships and Engagement: We are fortunate to have access to our kaumatua whom come willingly to community gatherings. They attend all our events. We have formed networks with language experts to co-design strategies that are culturally authentic and responsive to community needs. These will to be a vital partnership when forming our Rautaki Reo Māori. Encouraged and engaged whānau and local communities in the development and implementation of our Rautaki
Curriculum and Resources: Integrate Te Reo Māori across the curriculum or learning programs. Develop or adapt curriculum resources that incorporate Māori perspectives, language, and cultural practices. Ensure access to quality resources, including digital tools and materials, that support language learning and use.
Language Environment: Create a supportive language environment where Te Reo Māori is visible, valued, and actively used. This may include signage, greetings, ceremonies, and daily interactions that incorporate Māori language and cultural practices.
Monitoring and Evaluation: Establish mechanisms to monitor progress and evaluate the effectiveness of our Rautaki Reo Māori journey. Collect feedback from staff, tamariki, and our whānau members to continuously improve and adapt approaches based on outcomes and challenges encountered.
Sustainability and Long-Term Planning: Develop a long-term strategy that prioritizes sustainability and continuity in Māori language initiatives. This includes succession planning, ongoing funding commitments, and embedding language strategies within our Kura, our tikanga and school policies.
Celebration and Recognition: Celebrate successes and achievements in our journey to having our own Rautaki Reo Māori. Recognize individuals and groups who contribute to promoting and preserving Te Reo Māori within our learning school community.
