Breakouts

Breakouts are games that require students to think critically, problem-solve, collaborate and apply knowledge to a series of puzzles. Based on the ever popular Escape Room phenomena, Breakouts are a way for teachers to assess student’s understanding of material or a fun way to introduce a new idea. Breakouts are developed by looking at the main ideas the teacher wants the students to know. These ideas and concepts are then turned into a variety of puzzles and clues.  The students then have a fixed amount of time to solve these challenges, riddles  and mysteries in order to “break out”.

If you are interested in playing a Breakout EDU in your classroom, ile@p is able to help you create a game that is specific to your subject matter or help you find a game that is already made and available on the Breakout EDU website. The following materials are available to check out and use for your game:

It is also possible to make digital Breakout Edu games that only require a laptop per group. There are a lot of free digital games available here and here. ile@p is also happy to help create a digital Breakout Edu that is specific to your curriculum.

“That [breakout] was so awesome!  Wow, what an incredible service. Oh, and the kids LOVED it–and it’s hard to wow 8th graders these days.” – Kelly Clampett, 8th Grade Teacher
