The Gettysburg National Park Service will lead PA Distance students on a virtual field trip to explore the Battle of Gettysburg. This historic battle was a turning point in the Civil War, marking the Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee’s second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often called the “High Water Mark of the Rebellion,” Gettysburg also inspired President Abraham Lincoln’s famous “Gettysburg Address.” We will offer two sessions:
Grades 2-6: Re-Enlist
Would you re-enlist in a Civil War army for three years after serving for just three months and learning about the life of a soldier?
Grades 7-12: Cost of War
Were the outcomes of the Civil War worth the costs of battle, including the destruction and loss of life at Gettysburg?

The second in the 'Elementary meet-up Series", Elementary students are invited to meet up and craft together at the Craft Shack in Export PA. We will have a guided class where students will learn how to use a paint brush to paint 3D objects. They will get to choose their character, paint it, and take it home. This is a great opportunity for families to talk about the school year and meet each other. We will be joined by Mrs. Brecht.

Join us and your PA Distance Science Teachers for a tour of the Allegheny Observatory. We will get a tour of the observatory, learn about the research that is done there, and see the telescopes and tools they use to see the sky! In the daytime we can observe the sun and often see sunspots. Some days we can see the moon or Venus as well. It might include Saturn, Jupiter, the Moon or star clusters.

This field trip is only for students in grades 7-12. If you have an interest in the medical field then this virtual field trip is perfect for you! we will get to watch a professional surgeon insert a Watchman device into a patient. The Watchman is an FDA-approved device that lowers the risk of stroke in people with AFIB who are unable to take blood-thinning drugs. The Watchman device is implanted in the heart during a minimally invasive, one-hour procedure through a small incision in the leg. Most patients can return to everyday activities the next day. Cardiologists use a real-time 3D map to pinpoint the exact source of heart rhythm abnormalities (arrhythmias) to guide treatments.

Together, we will visit the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, a historic and educational site along the Schuylkill River, where we will explore how water moves through natural and urban systems and why water stewardship matters. We will engage with interactive exhibits focused on Philadelphia’s water history, the city’s watershed, and modern environmental science, including hands-on learning about water quality, stormwater, and the organisms that help keep rivers healthy. Part of our experience will take place outdoors adjacent to the river, giving us real-world context as we observe and investigate the natural environment around us.
