The PYP (Primary Years Programme) defines Physical, Social and Personal Education (PSPE) as an integral aspect of a child's well-being.
It focuses on the development of the concepts, knowledge, attitudes, and skills that contribute to this well-being in a holistic way.
This encompasses:
Physical well-being: Promoting an active and healthy lifestyle, developing movement skills, understanding the body's functions, and making informed choices about health and safety.
Social well-being: Fostering positive interactions, understanding different perspectives, developing empathy, building relationships, and recognising rights and responsibilities within communities.
Personal well-being: Cultivating self-awareness, managing emotions, developing resilience, establishing a sense of identity, and making ethical decisions.
Instead of being a stand-alone subject, PSPE is integrated throughout the curriculum. It is not broken down into separate, isolated units.
In essence, the PYP views Physical, Social, and Personal Education as fundamental to the overall development of the child and ensures its integration across all learning experiences rather than treating it as a separate subject with a distinct curriculum breakdown.
It is broken down into the following National Curriculum subject areas:
Physical Education (PE)
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) / Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Spiritual , Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) and British values
