The Primary Years Programme (PYP) views Arts as a fundamental and powerful mode of communication through which children explore, express, and construct their understanding of themselves and the world around them. It's not just about learning artistic skills, but also about fostering creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and social interactions. At LAPW we recognise that learning extends beyond language and that the arts provide unique avenues for inquiry, communication, and expression.
The PYP integrates Arts throughout its transdisciplinary framework rather than treating it as a separate subject in isolation. Learning in the Arts is woven into the Units of Inquiry, which are organised under six Transdisciplinary Themes of global significance.
Within each Unit of Inquiry, the Arts can be a powerful tool for inquiry, expression, and reflection.
Children might:
Respond to existing artworks to develop critical analysis, interpretation, and evaluation skills.
Create their own artworks to communicate meaning, develop technical skills, take creative risks, and solve problems.
The PYP identifies four main art forms:
Dance: Exploring and communicating through movement.
Drama: Exploring and communicating through role-play, improvisation, and performance.
Music: Exploring and communicating through sound, rhythm, melody, and harmony.
Visual Arts: Exploring and communicating through various visual media and techniques.
By integrating these art forms across the curriculum, the PYP aims to develop the whole child, fostering their aesthetic appreciation, creative potential, and ability to communicate and understand the world in diverse ways.
It is broken down into the following National Curriculum subject areas:
