One goal of the Packer/ArtWorks for Youth Partnership in South Africa is to help students develop an understanding of history of apartheid and the fight against it. Our primary text is the film Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which requires some background knowledge of apartheid and South African history. To help provide of us with this background information, students will do some research on an assigned topic and present what they have learned at the appropriate point during the movie.
The research does not need to be extensive. Your job will be to describe the basic facts about your topic and how it relates to the struggle against apartheid. In your trip journal, you will pull your research together into a bullet list that can serve as your notes when you present your topic in South Africa. Here is an example
