The science research program was an incredibly unique and impactful introduction to the scientific community. At the end of my sophomore year, I joined a cancer research lab at Hunter College. Though I had yet to take my first real biology class, my mentors took me under their wing and taught me how to perform biochemical assays, read journal articles, and interpret data.
During my second summer at the Foster Lab, I led a research project assessing the ability of different extra virgin olive oil brands to kill cancer cells. Later that year, I wrote a research paper and presented my results in symposia. The support and guidance from my mentors and the science research teachers at Packer empowered me and instilled confidence in my abilities to succeed in science in higher education and as a professional.
I am currently finishing my first year of veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania. This summer I plan to perform epidemiological research on samples of avian retroviruses taken from turkeys in the New Jersey and Pennsylvania areas. While my research focus has evolved over time, the skills and knowledge I gained during my years in the science research program continue to influence all of my scientific pursuits. I am well-equipped with valuable tools for meaningful engagement within the scientific community, and I am endlessly grateful for the opportunities I was given as a student at Packer.
