It has been another outstanding year for the students in the Science Research Program. The 33 students in the program are now placed with different mentors across the NYC Metro area studying subjects ranging from machine learning to cocaine addiction to extreme droughts. The topics are as varied as the 33 exceptional students that make up this program.
The 11th and 12th grade students have spent approximately 1,680 combined hours working in their respective labs - learning skills that will benefit them well beyond the lab bench. The 10th graders have learned to read research articles, give presentations, create a resume and cover letter and have matched with a mentor in order to begin hands-on research this summer. The students were able to hear talks from visiting scientists on water responsive materials, ligament regeneration, learning and memory, and forensic biology as it pertains to the work of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. We are so appreciative of the scientists who visited us and all of the scientists who mentor our research students. This program couldn't exist without them.
Thank you also to Jen Weyburn, Elizabeth Hastings, Maria Nunes, Kerry Kline, Larry Le, Raoul Brown. the whole science department, the advisors, and countless others at Packer who support the work of these students. It truly takes the whole community to make this program such a success.
And last, but not least, thank you ISR students. You have supported each other through the highs and lows of the research journey. You've celebrated the accomplishments - publications, advancing in competitions, matching with a mentor, a successful research trial after many unsuccessful ones, IRB approval, etc. You've stood by each other through the hard times - a failed trial, troubleshooting code, rejection letters from potential mentors, the tedium of data analysis and so much more. Every single step of this science research journey has helped prepare you for something later in life. We are so proud of what you've done. A special nod to the following students:
Madison Caldon was a semifinalist in the NYC Metro region JSHS in Biology.
Ben Efrat-Henrici was a semifinalist in the NYC Metro region JSHS and a finalist in the Terra NYC STEM fair in Environmental Science.
Lydia Evans was a finalist in the Terra NYC STEM Fair in Chemistry.
Gianna Leon was a semifinalist in the NYC Metro region JSHS in Biology.
Julian Rosenberg was a semifinalist in the NYC Metro region JSHS in Biology.
Dev Sangha was a semifinalist in the NYC Metro region JSHS in engineering.
Monica Somosi was a semifinalist in the NYC Metro region JSHS in Neuroscience.
Devon Super was a finalist in the Terra NYC STEM Fair in Engineering.
Liam Zuckerman was a top 300 finalist in the Regeneron STS, won 3rd place in Physics in the NY Metro JSHS semi-finals round and is about to get his second paper published - this time in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
We are so very proud of the work of all of the ISR students and look forward to a productive summer in the labs.
Warmly,
