As seniors, we embarked on our third and final year in the Science Research Program. We continued to visit our labs, building confidence in new techniques and learning more about our research. We presented to our Science Research classes and stepped into a mentorship role for the younger students in the program. In these positions, we helped sophomores read their first papers, complete their first presentations, and reach out to mentors. In doing so, we were able to reminisce on our first year in the program. Beyond mentorship, we began competing in Science Research competitions around the city such as Terra NYC, JSHS, and Regeneron STS. Many of our seniors were semi-finalists and finalists. This was a significant experience; we were able to present our research and see the research of other students around the New York City area.Â
As we move on to our next steps, we will never forget the value of our time in the Science Research Program. This program has taught us to be independent but not be afraid to ask for help. We have learned invaluable skills pertaining to science but also what it means to be an adult in the professional world. Our mentors and teachers proved to be enormous tools in our development and learning. Regardless of if we continue to explore the depths of science in the future, the experiences that we have shared in this program will always remain applicable. Thank you to Ms. Machac, Mr. Holzinger, Ms. Schmitz, and all the mentors and PIs that have made our time in the Science Research Program so meaningful.
