Welcome to Pack 105!
New to Cub Scouts? Don't feel like you have to know everything before joining in on the fun and adventure. We encourage you to ask questions: any leader or seasoned parent is happy to assist you.
The most important thing to know is this:
Our goal is to help kids grow into responsible, successful leaders and community members.
We accomplish this goal by teaching and following the Scout Law: A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.
Pack 105 is made up of:
Volunteer Adults - we are all parents like you! Safety training and background checks are required for all adults, and our Pack is all-hands-on-deck to keep things running smoothly.
Older Scouts from Pack 105 often volunteer to help out at meetings and events.
Cub Scouts, of course! These are Kindergarten through 5th grade kiddos.
Siblings are always welcome to attend. Please note that some programming may not be available or appropriate for younger kiddos, but we've all got families and we don't want anyone to feel unwelcome because they've got littles!
If your child is 6th grade or older, they are welcome to consider Troop 105--the next level of Scouting America.
Pack 105 Frequently Asked Questions
GroupMe App - This is our primary form of communication. Download it if you haven’t already, and ask your den leader to add you to the den chat. This is where *everything* happens!
Register Here - www.BeAScout.org. You’ll pay a registration fee of $94 to BSA, the national organization, and this membership renews annually. This fee covers things like liability insurance and background checks, and stays with the national organization. (Please know that you are welcome to come and check out a meeting before registering, but your scout cannot earn awards until they register.)
Pack 105 Dues - To help offset the cost of awards and activities, Pack 105 charges $100 for local dues, payable each January for the current school year. This money stays local, and pays for award loops and pins, trophies, derby cars, campground fees, and various program supplies. Fundraising opportunities exist that can cover these dues and can also be accrued for personal admission to other events. Pack dues can be paid via Zelle to treasurer@pack105mbtx.com.
Uniforms - We wear a “Class A” uniform to most community-facing events. This is a collared shirt with patches indicating our district and pack, and your Scout will earn additional patches to add to their shirt. These shirts are purchased from www.ScoutShop.org, but we do have a hand-me-down closet as well. There are also hats and other optional accessories available. To be clear, uniforms are encouraged, but please don’t let that stop you from joining! For more casual events, we often wear “Class Bs,” a bright green t-shirt that makes finding each other in public much easier. These are $12 and purchased locally, but are optional.
BSA Medical Forms - We collect these forms for each family member every year and bring to all overnight events to provide to paramedics or hospital staff in case of emergency. Forms expire each year, so save the fillable PDF, review/update for changes, then print & sign each form. This is faster and easier than handwriting the form each year. www.souting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/
Safeguarding Youth Training - This is required of every adult in Cub Scouts. This training was formerly called Youth Protection Training, or YPT, so you might still hear that term from time to time. This is completed on your Scouting.org account.
Pack 105 Website - www.Pack105MBTX.com - Many answers to common questions can be found here - meeting times, uniforms, leader contact info, etc. The website calendar does not always include all den-level events, so make sure you’re tuned in on GroupMe! You can also search up “Pack 105 Mont Belvieu” on Facebook to see pictures of the latest events!
Pack Meetings - The Pack meets monthly on the 4th Thursday in the MB Methodist Fellowship Hall. This meeting is primarily to award Scouts with their loops and pins for completed adventures. The meeting also includes announcements, songs, skits, and games for the Scouts.
Den Meetings - Dens are grade-level groups that meet twice a month (once for kindergarten Lions). These meetings are where the action is - Den Leaders and other parent volunteers organize the Adventures that Scouts complete in order to earn their loops and pins. If you can only make some events, these should be your priority. Most dens meet in the Scout House behind MB Methodist. Some dens meet in the Fellowship Hall, and sometimes meetings might be at a local park or other nearby location!
Other Expenses - We try to do many free events throughout the year, but some events do cost additional money. Recent examples of these might be overnights at Moody Gardens ($60) and the USS Lexington ($75). Some campouts include fees for program supplies, and these vary based on the organization hosting the campout but have ranged from $10-50 in the recent past. Additionally, most campouts will plan meals by den. One person will shop for food and then divide the cost equally.
Fundraising - We aim to make Scouting accessible to everyone. We offer at least 1 fundraiser per year. The profits from this go first to Local Dues, and then to a Scout Account that is managed by the Treasurer. Funds in the Scout Account (SA) can be used to pay for outings and such. When your Cub Scout crosses over to Troop in 5th grade, their SA funds follow them! (Note: If your Scout leaves the organization, any remaining funds in their SA will return to Pack 105: no fundraising money can be given directly to individuals due to IRS rules.)
