  • These Pathways honor TK–8 students who are making progress in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in one or more languages in addition to English. 

  • They prepare students to earn the Seal of Biliteracy in high school. 

  • Students can choose from three pathways: Participation, Home Language, or Attainment.

Participation Pathway

Grades TK - 8

To encourage students’ active involvement and steady progress in learning additional languages beyond English through participation and exposure.

Home Language Pathway

Grades TK - 8

To support students in maintaining and advancing their native or heritage language alongside English, fostering bilingualism rooted in family and culture.

Attainment Pathway

Grades 6 - 8

To recognize students who meet academic and language proficiency standards in English and a world language by middle school, preparing them for the Seal of Biliteracy.

California State Seal of Biliteracy

  • The State Seal of Biliteracy (SSB) honors high school graduates proficient in speaking, reading, and writing in English plus one or more additional languages.

  • It encourages students to study and develop skills in multiple languages.

  • The SSB certifies biliteracy, helping employers identify candidates with valuable language skills.

  • Universities use the SSB to recognize applicants’ language proficiency and may offer academic credit.

  • It prepares students with essential 21st-century skills for college and careers.

  • The program supports and promotes foreign language instruction in public schools.

  • The SSB strengthens community diversity by honoring multiple cultures and languages, fostering positive intergroup relationships.
