Students are accepted into the Accelerated Math program on a provisional basis at the end of 5th grade. They are chosen based on their grades in math, math test scores on the MAP test and recommendations of their 5th grade teacher. I try to meet with the students for a couple of weeks at the end of 5th grade to determine if they are comfortable learning at an accelerated pace. Students are on probation for the first marking period in 6th grade.
Accelerated math is a very fast moving program. We cover the 6th, 7th and 8th grade math curriculum in two years. In 8th grade, student take a high school level algebra course. Many of our students do not need to take Algebra 1 in high school and will start with Geometry. This puts them on track to take Calculus in their senior year of high school.
