I am excited to start working with my new 6th grade accelerated math class. I think they are ready to have a very successful year.
During the first half of 6th grade, we focus very heavily on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions and decimals and using the correct order of operations. These skills are essential for success in future math classes, so the students need to achieve fluency by the time they leave 6th grade.
The second major focus in 6th grade will be ratios, proportions and percents. This is really the beginning of algebraic thinking. They learn to use proportions to solve problems and extend their understanding of ratios and proportions to solve problems in percents. They learn to identify patterns and relationships between quantities. These skills are introduced in 6th grade and will really be expanded on in 7th grade.
The third big focus in 6th grade is geometry. Students will learn to measure lines and angles, using a ruler and protractor. They will learn to classify triangles and quadrilaterals and to determine the important attributes of each shape. They will learn to construct a four quadrant graph with positive and negative numbers and graph polygons in the coordinate plane. They will learn to find the area and perimeter of polygons and circles.
Our fourth big focus in 6th grade is integers. Students will learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide positive and negative integers. They will practice these skills by making a table of values to graph functions on a four quadrant graph. They will also learn to solving one-step equations involving fractions, decimals and integers.
