Spartans,
We hope you all had a relaxing break surrounded by loved ones. As we head into winter break, we have a full slate of exciting events and activities on campus. Our Drama Club will be presenting 10 Things I Hate About You, our Dance program will be showcasing their Winter Dance Show, and our MYP students will be sharing their Personal Projects. ASB has also planned several fun school activities and spirit days, and we have multiple wrestling events and spring sports tryouts, including Track and Field.
Thank you to the parents who have already shared their feedback, your voice makes a difference. If you haven’t done so yet, please take about 10 minutes to complete the Oxnard Climate Survey. Your input helps us continue improving the experience for all of our students.
Rio Mesa would like to thank Derek Luna for representing Rio Mesa at the Cross Country CIF State Championships.
Rio Mesa High School will soon be launching our annual School Climate Survey, an important tool that helps us understand how students, families, and staff feel about their experiences on campus. This survey gives our school community a meaningful way to share honest feedback about what we are doing well and where we can improve.
Your participation truly makes a difference. Thanks to feedback from past surveys, the district is now working on adding a student drop-off lane to improve safety and traffic flow. Survey results have also guided decisions about campus beautification, support programs, and new ways to acknowledge student accomplishments.
We encourage all parents, students, and staff to complete the School Climate Survey once it becomes available. Please note that an email address is required to complete the survey. The survey is brief and directly influences the improvements we make for our students.
Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective and help us continue building a school environment where every student feels supported, safe, and valued.

Spartans,
As we head into Thanksgiving Break next week, I want to extend my gratitude to our entire Spartan community. This is a time to pause, appreciate one another, and give thanks for the support, collaboration, and hard work that make Rio Mesa such a special place. Please remember there is no school all next week.
When we return, we will have three weeks left in the quarter. Families can log into StudentVUE to review current grades and help students stay on track for a strong finish.
We also have an important survey coming out in early December, Climate Survey Prep Week. We are asking all parents, students, and staff to participate and share their feedback about how we are doing as a school. Thanks to community input, the district is already working on adding a drop-off lane, and we continue looking for more ways to recognize and celebrate student accomplishments.
Finally, consider joining us for some of our upcoming athletic events and performing arts shows, including drama and dance. Your support means the world to our students.
Wishing everyone a safe, restful, and meaningful Thanksgiving Break.
Spartans,
As a way to honor the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, there will be no school this Tuesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day. The 11th also marks the anniversary of the end of World War I in 1918.
As we enjoy the day off, let’s take a moment to recognize our family members, colleagues, and community members who have served.
This year, many veterans and federal employees are also feeling the effects of the government shutdown. If you’re able, consider supporting Food Share Ventura County (foodshare.com), which provides food to local families in need.
Thank you for all you do for our students, families, and community—and for always looking out for one another.
As part of our ongoing commitment to campus safety, Rio Mesa teachers took part in a STOP the Bleed training this week. The hands-on session was led by School Nurse Lauren Bova and CTE Health and Medical teacher Taylor Hunter, who guided staff through life-saving techniques to help control severe bleeding in emergency situations.
This important training helps ensure our staff are prepared to respond quickly and effectively to keep our students safe.
Rio Mesa students are excited to announce a very special Spanish-language theater production, only the third performance of its kind at the school! This is a unique opportunity for students to participate in a performance that celebrates the Spanish language, culture, and creativity.
Students interested in acting, working behind the scenes, or helping bring this one-of-a-kind production to life should complete the form found via the QR code.
Parents or community members who would like to support this special project can contact Assistant Principal Jimenez for more information at 8jesus.jimenez@oxnardunion.org
Following recent federal news of cuts within the Department of Education and specifically the Office of Special Education (OSEP), VCOE and VC SELPA invite parents and caregivers of children in Ventura County to join a special education community conversation to hear about Ventura County Office of Education’s and Ventura County SELPA’s ongoing commitment to support students with IEPs. VCOE administration, as well as administration from LEAs and VC SELPA, will provide an overview of the state of special education and how we can all work together to continue to provide the best education possible to our students.

Our “Mental Health Matters” shirts have become a meaningful way for staff to show support for mental health awareness. After many requests, Ms. Ruff has opened an online store where students, parents, staff, and community members can order their own shirts and be part of the message.
These shirts are more than just school spirit wear — they’re a reminder that it’s okay to talk about mental health and take care of one another. Everyone is encouraged to wear them every Monday to show unity and support across our campus and community.

Let’s continue spreading the message — because at Rio Mesa, mental health matters.
On October 27 our school will conduct an Active Assailant Safety Drill in collaboration with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. This important drill helps ensure that students and staff are prepared to respond quickly and effectively in the event of a campus emergency. Working alongside our local law enforcement partners, we are committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all members of our school community.
This week, students from the Art and Science classes embarked on a unique collaborative field trip that combined creativity with curiosity at Land and Sky in Oxnard. The excursion provided an exciting opportunity for students to explore real-world applications of both artistic expression and scientific inquiry.
During the trip, students engaged in hands-on activities, observed natural phenomena, and participated in interactive workshops that highlighted the connections between art and science. By blending creativity with experimentation, students were able to see how scientific concepts can inspire artistic work and how artistic perspectives can deepen the understanding of science.
Teachers emphasized the importance of collaboration, critical thinking, and observation during the trip. Students returned energized and inspired, ready to bring their new insights back to the classroom. This innovative experience reflects Rio Mesa High’s commitment to integrating disciplines, fostering curiosity, and creating meaningful learning experiences for all students.
Looking for a fun way to celebrate Halloween while supporting student leadership? Link Crew has you covered! Students can order Boo-Bags filled with snacks, candy, and other treats to surprise a friend—or even treat themselves!

All proceeds from the Boo-Bags go directly back to support Link Crew events, helping our student leaders create fun and meaningful experiences for the entire school.
Don’t miss your chance to spread some spooky cheer—and show your Spartan spirit!

One Sunday a month at the Oxnard College community marketplace, we draw together attorneys, mental and physical health providers, community organizers, nonprofits, and county agencies to do their work on site and at no cost. We provide direct services, referrals, and essential information that would be hard to access during the M – F work week.
We mentor volunteers (including students) and offer opportunities for civic engagement and community involvement to all participants."
Spartans,
We will be hosting our Hall of Horrors event on October 24, before and after the game! Come out to support our ASB fundraiser and enjoy the last regular home game of the season.
We’re also celebrating some great news: first quarter grades and discipline have both improved as our students continue to show growth, responsibility, and dedication. Let’s keep up the momentum as we move into the second quarter!
As our fall sports season comes to an end, we want to thank our student-athletes and coaches for their hard work and commitment. Please continue to support our teams as we transition into an exciting winter sports season.
This Tuesday at approximately 10:25 AM, teachers will participate in a campus-wide safety system check. You may get an alert informing you of this drill. This brief test helps ensure that our emergency communication and response systems are working properly, keeping Rio Mesa prepared and safe at all times. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to campus safety!
The November 2025 breakfast and lunch menus are now available! Families can view the attached menus, which include Spanish translations and QR codes for easy access.

Rio Mesa High School successfully participated in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill this week! This statewide event helps schools like ours practice emergency response procedures and ensure that every student and staff member knows what to do in case of an earthquake or other emergency.
Our site safety team and staff did an excellent job following procedures, accounting for students, and maintaining calm throughout the drill. These exercises are an important part of our ongoing efforts to keep Rio Mesa a safe and prepared campus. We thank everyone for their cooperation and commitment to safety!
Spartans,
Thank you to all the parents and our partners at the Albert H. Soliz Library for joining us at the 10th Grade MYP Personal Project Exhibition. Our students did an outstanding job showcasing their creativity, critical thinking, and hard work. Events like this remind us of the incredible learning and growth happening every day at Rio Mesa. A special shoutout goes to Mrs. Lisette Severin, Ms. Alicia Alvarez, and Ms. Verity Olliff for their leadership in organizing this event and for their continued support of our students, the MYP program, and our school community.
Reminder: There will be no school on Monday—enjoy the long weekend and come back ready to finish the semester strong!
As we close out Quarter 1, final grades will begin to be posted over the weekend. Please take some time to review your student’s progress and celebrate their efforts. Each new quarter offers a fresh start and an opportunity to set new goals, so encourage your student to reflect on their successes and areas for growth.
The new quarter officially begins on Tuesday, and we ask that students check their schedules in advance to make sure they know where to go and are ready for a strong start.
On Thursday, October 17, our school will take part in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill, a statewide event that promotes earthquake preparedness and safety. During the drill, students and staff will practice the recommended “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” procedure to ensure everyone knows how to protect themselves in the event of an earthquake. This annual exercise is an important part of our commitment to keeping our school community safe and ready for emergencies.
Spartans,
This past Friday, our teachers and staff took part in a critical safety training focused on how to respond to an active assailant on campus. While we hope to never face such a situation, preparedness is key. The training was both informative and empowering, and it's part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of every student and staff member on campus.
Looking ahead, we’ll be putting our learning into practice during a safety drill scheduled for October 27 or 28, in collaboration with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. These drills are an important part of building a culture of readiness and resilience in our school community.
On a different note, we want to keep families informed about some temporary changes to transportation:
This week, the 4th period dismissal bus will begin its route with Orchard Park stops first. We’ll be alternating weekly between the Orchard Park and Nyland/El Rio stops to ensure fairness and efficiency.
Also, for those students who take the Gold Coast public bus, please be aware that the Nyland stops have been temporarily relocated due to ongoing city construction in Oxnard. Thankfully, this does not affect our school bus routes, only the public transportation lines.
As always, thank you for staying informed and for partnering with us to keep our campus both safe and connected.
Nyeland Mutual Water is beginning a project that will temporarily limit access to Nyeland Avenue for approximately 5–6 months. At this time, regular school bus routes will not be affected, and Gold Coast Transit (city bus) will provide service along detour routes.
Temporary Bus Stop Locations (via Gold Coast Transit):
Santa Clara @ Nyeland Community Center (timepoint)
Santa Clara & Friedrich
Friedrich & Orange
Ventura Blvd. @ Santa Claus Statue
Stop Closures:
Nyeland & Ventura Blvd.

For more information on Route 15 detours and other service updates, visit: Gold Coast Transit Service Alerts
Our 10th grade MYP students are ready to showcase their creativity, critical thinking, and hard work! Join us for the Personal Project Exhibition on Thursday, October 9, 2025 at 6:30 PM in the Albert H. Soliz Library.
This event highlights the culmination of Quarter 1 Personal Projects, giving students the opportunity to share their passions and learning journeys with the community. Families, staff, and friends are all welcome to attend and celebrate our students’ accomplishments.
"This week in our 12th grade AVID classes, Mrs. McDevitt, with the support of Ms. Jimenez, led a CaliforniaColleges.edu financial aid lesson. Seniors were introduced to the basics of financial aid—including grants, scholarships, work-study, and loans—and began the first steps of their financial aid applications.
The lesson gave students a clearer understanding of how to pay for college and training programs after high school, while providing tools and guidance to move forward in the application process. Families are encouraged to continue the conversation at home and support their students as they take these important steps toward their post-secondary goals."

Together, we can make sure every Spartan feels comfortable and confident at school!
Spartans,
At Rio Mesa High School, student safety is our highest priority. If your student ever witnesses bullying, vandalism, threats, or any unsafe behavior, we encourage them to immediately notify a teacher, counselor, administrator, or any trusted staff member. Parents and students can also make anonymous reports through WeTip at https://www.wetip.com/. WeTip is a confidential reporting system that lets anyone share information about suspicious or unsafe activity without giving their name. Every report goes directly to trained professionals who review it and notify school staff so we can respond quickly and appropriately.
We’re also looking forward to some exciting events. Our Homecoming Game is tonight, and the Homecoming Dance will take place tomorrow evening. Please remind your students to bring their school ID so they can enter quickly and enjoy the festivities. We also encourage all of our students to participate in school activities like these—they’re a great way to connect with classmates and show Spartan spirit.
Next week is our Back to School Night, where we will welcome over 15 outside community organizations to our campus. These groups include colleges, family support services, and after-school programs. We invite you and your family to come, meet the representatives, and learn about the many resources available to our students.
Thank you for partnering with us to make Rio Mesa a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. This school year, we will be conducting four emergency drills including earthquake, shelter-in-place, lockdown, and evacuation drills, to ensure everyone knows how to respond in different situations.
Our Campus Safety Team, made up of dedicated staff members, helps plan and coordinate these efforts. We’re also developing a student safety leadership group so students can have a voice in creating a safe and prepared campus.
By working together, we’re building a community that’s ready, informed, and looking out for one another.

The MYP Club was created to support freshmen and sophomores as they experience the challenges of the MYP curriculum. Having gone through the program ourselves, our cabinet understands the dedication and effort required to succeed, and we want to use that experience to help others. So we would like to offer peer tutoring in both English and Spanish. Our tutors are students who have completed Honors MYP, Regular MYP, and are part of the IB DP and CP programs, including AP courses, so we can also provide support beyond MYP. We will also be hosting informational meetings during lunch for students who want to know more about the IB Diploma program or IB Career Program and their requirements.
We are a completely student-run club, so please don't be afraid to reach out. We will also be partnering with teachers who already provide tutoring services, so if your teachers refer you to us, please don't be concerned. On days when teachers are unavailable or when there are more students than they can help, they will be referring those students to us, and we will put them in contact with a tutor. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to rmhsmypclub@gmail.com. You can also find us on IG as @rmhsmypclub.

Spartans,
We’ve had another great week at Rio Mesa! I want to take a moment to encourage all of our students to get involved on campus. Club Rush is coming soon, which is a perfect chance to explore new interests, meet friends, and join a group that makes you happy. Beyond clubs, we also have athletic games, dances, and school events coming up. The more our students participate, the more connected they feel to our school—and research shows that when students feel connected, they often do better academically and socially.
We are so proud of the energy and spirit our students bring each day. Please encourage your student to step outside their comfort zone, try something new, and take advantage of all the opportunities Rio Mesa has to offer.
Finally, a quick reminder: our football team is playing Camarillo tonight at Camarillo High School. We’d love to see our Spartan families come out and support the team—it’s always great to fill the stands with school spirit.
Thank you for being such an important part of our community and for supporting our students in all they do. Together, we make Rio Mesa a place where every Spartan can thrive.
We are proud to share some exciting updates about our International Baccalaureate (IB) programs at Rio Mesa!
All IB students and parents are asked to view the IB Policy video available on our school website. QR codes are posted for easy access. After viewing, every IB student and parent must complete the online form to confirm understanding of IB expectations and policies.
IB exam registration will open on October 1, 2025. Students will receive support and instructions in their IB classes to ensure all registrations are completed correctly and on time.
Our IB students achieved outstanding results last year:
15 students completed the full IB Diploma Programme (DP). These students successfully met all requirements, which include taking six IB courses and exams, completing the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
22 students completed the IB Career-related Programme (CP). These students fulfilled all requirements, including their career pathway coursework, the Reflective Project, Service Learning, Language Development, and Personal and Professional Skills (PPS).
Collectively, our students passed 298 individual IB exams with a score of 4 or higher—a tremendous accomplishment that reflects both student dedication and teacher support.
These achievements highlight the hard work, resilience, and global-mindedness of our Spartans, and we are excited to see what this year’s IB students will accomplish.
Thank you for supporting our IB community as we continue preparing students to thrive in college, career, and beyond!
Mr. Dunst's class completes the Prosperity Screner Survey
Students are encouraged to complete the Prosperity Screener Survey at bit.ly/ouhsdcares. This survey is an important tool that helps the school understand students’ well-being and needs so we can provide the right support and create a safe, healthy learning environment for all. Several classes participated third period this week.
If you haven’t filled it out yet, please try to complete it at home. Beginning Wednesday, September 3rd, any students who have not completed the survey will be pulled out of class to finish it.
Your input makes a difference—thank you for helping us better support our Spartan community!
Spartans, have you checked out Minga yet? Minga is our school-wide app where students can stay connected, check the calendar, get event updates, and even earn rewards for showing Spartan Pride. It’s designed to help us build community, recognize positive behavior, and keep everyone in the loop.
One of the best features of Minga is Minga Points. Students earn points by getting involved, showing responsibility and respect, and representing what it means to be a Spartan. These points can then be spent at the Minga Store, and we’re excited to announce that the store is officially up and running!
This week, during Lunch on the Lawn, the Minga Store was open for students to cash in their points. There are plenty of fun rewards to choose from, but supplies are limited. In honor of our rival football game, they featured a special item: Spartan Spirit Towels! These are the perfect way to liven up the Legion and show your pride at football games.
Keep earning points, keep representing your Spartan best, and don’t miss your chance to grab exclusive rewards!
Spartans,
It’s game day! Tonight is our first home football game—please check the game day rules we’ve shared to help keep the event safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Also, be on the lookout for our lunch form. Completing it has helped us continue providing free meals for our students, so please consider filling it out if you haven’t already.
Thank you for your patience as we continue balancing classes to best support student learning. You may also notice that our campus is getting a fresh coat of paint—we’re excited for these improvements!
Finally, mark your calendars: Back to School Night is September 25. We look forward to seeing you there.
Go Spartans!
We’re excited to share that Rio Mesa is getting a fresh new look! Thanks to the support of Measure E, our school is currently undergoing a campus-wide painting project. These improvements will not only brighten and refresh our facilities, but also help us continue to provide a welcoming environment for our students, staff, and community.
We are grateful for the ongoing support that makes projects like this possible, and we are excited to let you know that more renovations will be happening soon.

We made it through our first week of the school year, and I couldn’t be more proud of our students and staff! Thank you to everyone for your energy, positivity, and commitment to making Rio Mesa a welcoming place to learn and grow.
As we move forward, I want to encourage all students to take advantage of our dismissal bus. It’s a great resource to help you stay for tutoring, clubs, sports, or other after-school activities without worrying about transportation home. Let’s make the most of the opportunities available this year!
