The start of the school year at Rio Mesa High School kicked off with energy, excitement, and Spartan pride as over 300 incoming freshmen took part in Freshman Orientation. This event, designed to help new students feel at home, was led by a dedicated team of 80 juniors and seniors serving as Link Crew Leaders. Under the guidance of our new Link Crew Coordinator, Martina Emde, these student leaders worked hard to ensure every freshman felt welcomed and prepared for their high school journey.
Throughout the day, Link Crew Leaders guided freshmen through a variety of activities meant to build confidence, encourage connections, and introduce them to the campus. Icebreaker games allowed students to meet new classmates in a fun, low-pressure environment, while small group discussions gave freshmen a chance to ask questions and hear firsthand advice from experienced Spartans. Campus tours ensured that students knew where to find their classes, the library, cafeteria, and other important resources before the first day of school.
Beyond helping freshmen get comfortable with their new surroundings, Link Crew aimed to foster a sense of belonging from day one. Leaders shared tips for staying organized, getting involved in clubs and sports, and maintaining a healthy balance between academics and social life. The day ended with team-building activities that left students laughing, energized, and ready to start the year strong. With the leadership of Martina Emde and the enthusiasm of our 80 Link Crew Leaders, Freshman Orientation set the tone for a year of connection, community, and Spartan success.
Students who were unable to attend orientation can come on Tuesday, August 12 between 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM to check out a Chromebook.
