Since Fall of 2022, Ohio Wesleyan students have provided free one-on-one and group tutoring as part of OWU’s new Bishop Scholars program. OWU students currently tutor at Delaware City’s Carlisle, Conger, and Woodward elementary schools; Buckeye Valley Local’s East and West elementary schools and middle school; and the Columbus Bilingual Academy North. "High-dosage” tutoring sessions, held for 30 to 45 minutes up to three times a week, are helping children in grades K – 8 get back on track academically following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Bishop Scholars program is overseen by Kerri Robe, Ohio Wesleyan's Assistant Manager of Community Service Learning, and it is supported by a two-year $499,170 grant awarded to the university in August by the Ohio Department of Education in partnership with the Ohio Department of Higher Education. OWU tutors begin by completing a comprehensive onboarding process that prepares them to effectively tutor youth in the school setting. Then, through ongoing training and professional development, tutors gain additional knowledge and skills that enhance their ability to work with their students.
"We are fortunate to have highly engaged school partners, committed tutors, and unwavering support from the Ohio Department of Education – all of which allows us to invest in and positively impact the children identified for additional support," Robe notes. "We have seen growth in both academics and self-confidence, and we look forward to having all of our students – our K-8 partners and their college tutors – realize their full potential.”
