During the month of December, kindergartners explored the unit of inquiry, "How We Express Ourselves." They had the opportunity to learn about and share stories related to winter holidays such as Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. The students demonstrated open-mindedness as they listened to their friends share the holiday traditions their families celebrate. Teachers read both fiction and nonfiction books about these holidays, and through these stories, kindergartners learned the purpose (function) behind each celebration. They also learned holiday songs, including those for Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Feliz Navidad.
As part of their holiday learning, kindergartners from three classes brought in their family holiday recipes. Together, they compiled a Holiday Cookbook and some students even shared the final products of their recipes with the class.
One of the students' favorite activities during the holiday season is decorating gingerbread boys and girls and exchanging them with friends in the classroom. Over the break, kindergartners showed respect by taking good care of their gingerbread guests.
Last but not least, kindergartners were thrilled to decorate their gingerbread houses with the help of parent volunteers, using their creativity and imagination.
Kindergartners wish you a joyful holiday season and a Happy 2025!

STORIES ARE TOLD EVERYWHERE!!!
Kindergartners made strong connections between their Gingerbread Boy/Girl exchange, the pillar of "RESPECT," and the central idea of the unit. Over the break, our students took great care of their gingerbread guests. Not only did they show respect and kindness, but they also created numerous stories as they took their guests on adventures to many different places.
The Three Little Pigs Tableau
Additionally, as part of our central idea, some kindergarten students had the opportunity to listen to a guest speaker read The Three Little Pigs. Afterward, the students created frozen scenes depicting the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Stories serve various purposes, and through the creation of these tableaux, the students used their imagination to express the narrative in three distinct parts, exploring both the form and function of storytelling.
