Hello 2nd Grade Community!
We hope everyone had a happy and restful Winter Break! Somehow, we’ve made it to the New Year of 2025. Before we move forward, let’s take a moment to reflect on our progress during the month of December!
In December, we wrapped up our How the World Works unit, focusing on endangered animals and the roles humans play in both their endangerment and conservation. Students selected an endangered animal to research, becoming experts on their chosen species. They learned about the reasons these animals are endangered and explored ways humans can help protect them. After compiling their research into essays, students worked in groups to create final posters to share their findings. This project had a powerful impact as students reflected on the roles humans have in shaping the world around us and the responsibilities we bear in making it better.
Second grade also visited the wonderful Queens Zoo to learn about the scientific process involved in observing animals. We had a great time walking around the zoo, observing the animals, and participating in a private lesson with a zoo educator.
Our endangered animal poster showcase will be held this Thursday, Jan. 9th, where students will present their research to the school community. Other students will also have the opportunity to sign petitions supporting the conservation of endangered species.
We’re excited to share all that we've learned and look forward to the next steps in our learning journey!
We are currently in our How We Express Ourselves unit. Students are diving into cultures and traditions and what it means to express our culture, how our traditions shape the way we see the world around us, and connects us with others. Students are in the process of working on their cultural projects which they will display in a gallery walk for parents. Parents have also been encouraged to bring traditional foods from their culture to share in a potluck together. This will take place the week of Jan 13-17th.
Our next unit will be Where We Are In Place & Time which will begin on Feb 1st. We are looking forwrd to learning and exploring!
