Some benefits of reading during the summer that students learned about were:
Preventing Summer Slide: Regular reading helps prevent the loss of academic skills that can occur during the long summer break, ensuring your child stays on track for the new school year.
Improving Literacy Skills
Encouraging a Love for Reading
Enhancing Imagination and Creativity
Building Empathy and Understanding
Students learned about the QBPL summer reading program and played a fun true or false about the library!
Students in third grade were able to participate in a zoom webinar about Pokémon Characters and the real insects they are based on.
One of our fifth grade students was able to present his research on the NYC Subway to his class.
In Quarter 3 students in 1st grade discussed what authors and illustrators do. They then were given a short passage that they made an illustration for.
We also held our school wide Read-A-Thon during quarter 3. We had a number of students reading and hope to continue having a Read-A-Thon to celebrate OWN2's reading culture!
Here are our Read-a-Thon students who were our top readers and students with donations...
Zane Spence
Maya Perumal
Joshua Delves
Aziyah Martin
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!!
This was our first read-a-thon that we have held in a while. We are very proud of the students who took part and read or donated. The goal of our read-a-thon is to enable a love of reading in our students. Finding new books and series helps students continue reading long after the read-a-thon is done. Students are thinkers when they choose books and topics that they themselves are interested in.

4th and 5th grades practiced online searching. We learned about Keywords (our search terms) and pulled out our key search terms from questions. Students also answered trivia questions based on what they had been studying in class.
Trying out our search terms.

Research Skills
In class, 5th graders read "Home of the Brave" by Katherine Applegate. The book is about Kek who comes to America from the Sudan. In library, we read "Brothers in Hope" by Mary Williams which is based on true events about the Lost Boys journey.
Open Minded
Communication: students discussed how it must have been for the Lost Boys of Sudan
"The Shelf Elf"--Showed students the library expecations...
We learned that we need to return our books and to make sure to keep our books "clean and neat."
This book showed what could happen when we are not careful with our books. Marion dropped jam on her book and was unable to clean it until there was no book left.
