Art
Hello my art enthusiasts! We were focusing on 3-D design this last quarter. Our focus was designing ceramic pieces that can be useful and decorative. The ceramic medallions can be used as a necklace.
Parents and students by the dozens came to attend our STEAM to Art Show "collab ", collaboration with Mr. Omar and myself. We wanted to share the wonderful projects that we worked on throughout the year as well as emphasize how there are many connections with art and science. We had a great turn-out of family and friends that came to support.
Our ceramics unit had our little artists making medallions and insense burners like this house made by 4th grader Chloe Johnson.
5th Graders used recycled materials to construct 3-D sculptures. Arron added the elements of line and cartooning to bring this one-of- a kind creation to life.
We studied pop artists like Andy Warhol to make this artwork called, "Don't cry over spilled milk".
My little designers learned balance and symmetry through color and design. We talked and shared symbols that reflect who we are. Here the heart symbol and the word love appear in the students art work.
Some of our little artists have designed their hats to talk and help them do homework or keep them company.
We learned that the bucket hat was first used in Ireland by fisherman before it became popular in our urban culture.
Being creative and learning about design helps our little artist make the connection with how design reflects who we are and our likes. Color, shape, line and balance is used to reflect the elements in art.
Kyre from Mrs. Hanrahans 3rd grade class took a virtual trip to China where we learned about their culture and art. Especially the calendar and the meanings behind all the animals that represent the calendar. Here we are applying balanced and symmetrical design art to our dragons.
Chinese dragons are strongly associated with water and weather in popular religion. They are believed to be the rulers of moving bodies of water, such as waterfalls, rivers, or seas. The Dragon god is the dispenser of rain as well as the zoomorphic representation of yang, the masculine power of generation. Here Erin was given a handout that gives little artist the option to choose the shape of the eyes.
YAYOI KUSAMA - Japanese born artist immigrated to the U. S. in the 60's because woman in Japan were not allowed to be artists and her family was very strict. Her style of painting dots on everything from people to animals became a phenomenon.
Yayoi sent letters to an artist named Georgia O'keefe who inspired her to come to America. Georgia O'keefe had a style that explored nature, bones, flowers and skyscrapers.
We studied comic-book illustrations to design a series of mini -portraits dedicated to woman artists, which included other countries like Iranian, Indian, African and Latin America.
This is an example of what is to come at our Art and STEAM show on May 1st. We will be exhibiting women artists, Chinese dragons, and ceramics from grades K-5. We hope to see you there!!!
We had a wonderful quarter where we have been getting prepared to use pottery clay. Here, our little artists were guided and shown how to use this special kind of clay called Model Magic.
Using color theory we mixed the clay to make secondary colors and hues to model small figurines and mini food items like fies, burgers, ice cream and pretzels.
LEGOS are a wonderful way to study 3-D art. Here we are working in groups to build a bridge over a waterway using Lego bricks only.
The Metropolitan Museum (MET) Trip & Collage
Mrs. Jimenez and Mr. Koske's 4th class helped one another sketch out their favorite pottery from life. Here we see Serenity and Eloghosa helping one another with their sketches of a Chinese pottery from the 16th century dynasty.
In making connections with other subjects such as music and science, I coordinated three trips with Ms. M our music teacher to the Metropolitan museum of Art in Manhattan.
Among the many rooms we passed we had to stop and see the famous instruments wing where we saw incredibly rare instruments. We took our knowledge of seeing ceramics from all over the world to use their sketches to compose a collage of art. All grades were assessed in their cutting skills to design their collage art.
Collage pottery illustrations. Collage is cutting or tearing paper and mounting it on paper or canvas.
Hello, my art lovers! Mr. Palacio here with great news about what to expect this year from the art room. I have decided this year's art show will be about how art, science, culture, and music intertwine. I am working closely with Mr. Omar, Mr. Thompson, and Mrs. M to bring you and our little artist into the future. With transdisciplinary lessons and a field trip to The Metropolitan Museum, we will explore how the world around us combines these wonderful subjects through art.
Our first quarter lessons were tied to STEAM. Our method of discovery through thinking, sharing, planning then drawing are similar to that of STEAM principals. We used this method of discovery and planning in our "Robot Workshop" where our little artists used tools such as rulers, shapes, and diagrams. We read the book "Robot Stop" and "Robots Robots Everywhere", plus watched a video on robots that help to take care of people in order to inspire our designs. Check out the links below to see what's happening in our class!
Inquirer: Showing curiosity and eagerness to explore different geometric shapes and artistic representations.
Self management: Demonstrating focus perseverance and organization during the art making process.
