April 2025
Fairness: The OWNCS Pillar for the month of April is Fairness. When students show fairness, they understand that others have differing opinions from themselves and understanding what others need to be successful. In addition, treating everyone with kindness and respect, ensuring everyone gets a chance to play, share, and be included in activities.
Sharing The Planet: The Impact of Storytelling
An inquiry into the interdependence of human and natural worlds through: rights, responsibilities, and dignity for all.
Inquirer: Students will be inquirers by asking questions that explore how ecosystems are interconnected and how human actions can affect these systems. This will foster a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility.
Communicator: Students will communicate their ideas through opinion writing to express their thoughts on the impact of storytelling and how stories shape ideas and actions. They will also explore scientific and mathematical ideas that connect to the stories and concepts of the environment (e.g., ecosystems and measurement), allowing students to express their opinions about how they can protect and care for the world.
Reading: We are currently reading books that help us to understand how to share different opinions, telling stories using opinion statements, and finding the difference between fact and opinion in texts.
Writing: Students have been learning the impact of their opinions and how ones opinion and story can shape other's thinking. Students have been practicing stating opinion statements and forming strong opinions with strong reasons.
Math: Students have been learning how to tell stories with patterns, shapes, and numbers. Students are able to share stories using pattern blocks, cubes, and shapes.
Kindergarten students are creating their own opinions based on why we should care for the Earth and how their strong opinions can help shape others.
