Unit of Inquiry
Unit Theme: Where we are in place and time
Description: An inquiry into histories and orientation in place, space and time through: natural and human drivers of movement, adaptation and transformation
Central Idea: The interdependence of things around us shapes the way we adapt and transform over time.
Unit Description
In this unit, second-grade students will explore the concept of classification as a tool for understanding the connections between objects, ideas, and people. They will examine how classification systems help us make sense of the world—whether by organizing rocks in Earth science, regions in geography, characters in literature, or measurements in math. Through synthesis of their learning across subjects, students will deepen their understanding of the interdependence of all things around them.
Learner Profiles
Fairness
This month, students demonstrated the pillar of Fairness by becoming geologists! They showed fairness by sharing rocks with one another and respectfully exploring each other’s ideas. As they observed three different rocks, they wrote both facts and opinions, showing appreciation for different perspectives.
Causation- Impact
Students took this month to learn more about poetry. Poetry often has specific structures (like rhyme, repetition, or line breaks) that cause particular effects. For example, a repeated phrase can emphasize a feeling, while a rhyme scheme might create a sense of rhythm. Students are encouraged to notice how the structure of a poem impacts how they read or interpret it.
Social Skills
This month, students developed their social skills by working together to explore different character perspectives in realistic fiction stories. They practiced empathy and understanding by identifying how a character’s feelings changed from the beginning to the end of the story. Using clues like the character’s thoughts, actions, dialogue, and illustrations, students worked together to dive deeper into the characters’ experiences.
