INTRODUCTION TO ART HISTORY 1200 - 1900: FALL SEMESTER
"Students are introduced to ancient artworks from an era prior to the modern conception of fine art. The timeline for this course begins with Byzantine, Gothic and Baroque and proceeds through Renaissance, Rococo and Realism. Throughout this course, two-dimensional and three-dimensional works from these historic eras are discussed with an emphasis on cross-cultural, political, religious, global and economic issues."
Students are exposed to art and architecture from around the world. Composition, theme and other elements of expression in art will be discussed in order for students to gain skills in analyzing, describing and assessing works of art. This art history course introduces students to famous artworks and discusses similarities and influences across cultures.
Although this course is not a project based class, students will be expected to create 1-3 art projects throughout the semester using supplies provided by the classroom. The course will focus on a core set of artworks and relevant primary literature. Emphasis on writing in art history as well as discussion and oral presentation skills. Art History students will attend 1-2 field trips to local museums and may incur a cost. There is a fee for this course."

"This one year course introduces students to contemporary media as an extension of the creative experience. Covered in this course of visual communications are aesthetics, art criticism, art-history, art-making and self-expression. The course includes exploring different cultural influences, historical periods and movements in art. Through lecture, research, reading materials, and assigned projects, the course emphasizes the elements and principles of art. The course concludes with relative links between the visual arts and professional career possibilities in digital art.
The objectives of this class are to achieve beginner technical and aesthetic skills using various tools to generate a broad range of two dimensional images. Students will learn to work with a design team, identify art careers, evaluate artwork, use the elements and principles of design in digital artworks, build a portfolio of digital art using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and other programs in the Adobe Creative Cloud.
Students will learn and develop their individual skills in a digital studio through hands-on instruction and group activities. State of the art computer equipment and software are provided in the classroom. The digital imaging projects assigned and produced in the Digital Art course reflect current industry standards and practices. A basic art course like Fundamentals of Visual Art is highly recommended as a prerequisite for this course, but not required. There is a fee for this course."

"This course is designed to review and introduce the student to the basic elements of art and principles of design, as well as the vocabulary of art. The student will become acquainted with various methods and materials used in producing two or three-dimensional artwork. The goal is to build a body of work and an understanding of the visual arts by the completion of the school year. Students will also learn how to effectively respond to and evaluate other bodies of artwork."

"The Art II course is aimed at improving the understanding of art through reading, writing, discussion, and hands-on practice. Additionally, the class focuses on exploring different 2-D and 3-D media and processes, building technical skill and craftsmanship, developing creative fluency, and creating a body of work. This course will address elements of art and principles of design in artwork as well as how artists have used these elements throughout history."

"Students in Art III will utilize the elements of art and principles of design learned in previous art courses to experiment with creative style and conceptual ideas. Students will work towards mastery over media and techniques through individualized instruction. Art III will focus on portfolio building, documenting and reflection on processes, and presenting artwork. Additionally, students will be asked to complete reading and writing activities concerning art history, aesthetics, and issues concerning art. Regular participation in art critiques will be required."

"The Art IV student will be asked to assume the role of the artist. With tools gained in previous art courses, Art IV students will lead their own artistic inquiries under instructor guidance. Through experimentation, investigation, and self guidance, the artist will be expected to create a portfolio. Regular critiques will be conducted to suggest methods to expand ideas and improve on techniques and skills. Emphasis will also be placed on professionalism in art which includes, but is not limited to the following: entering juried art competitions, writing project proposals, maintaining a portfolio, and writing artist statements."
