Kid Activism

Sofia Valdez, Future Prez

"Sofia Valdez, Future Prez" written and read by Andrea Beaty

Listen to the author read her story "Sofia Valdez, Future Prez." Sofia Valdez is a real go-getter! When she doesn't like something about her community, she gets help, and does something about it! An activist is someone who is not willing to let a situation go unnoticed. It is an individual who feels so passionately about a topic, they just can't help doing something to learn more, to raise awareness among others, and to bring about change. Kids can be activists too!

Ask yourself these questions:

What do you get angry about? Is there a way to use that anger for good? What is something good you would like to do or change?

Have you ever had anyone tell you that you can't do something, because you are just a kid? How does that make you feel? How can you be brave and try something even if it's hard?

Pick some activities or projects to explore this topic. Don't forget to share on Flipgrid!

Sofia Valdez made a plan for a new park!

Young activists all have something important in common. They feel passionate about something they know needs to change. They use their passion to speak out, write letters, speak to decision makers, and start social media movements that bring about change. Check out these real life examples!

11 year old Marley Dias started a book drive to provide books with characters that look like her. She was hoping to collect 1000 books with her social media hastag #1000blackgirlbooks but collected over 8000! She now has written her own book and continues to speak out for books written by Black authors and others that need to see themselves in the books they read.

Mrs. Conrad purchased these award winning books to add to her own home library. What books to you have that celebrate #ownvoices?

Our Berks Co. Public Libraries also offer many #ownvoices ebooks and audio books through the Libby and OverDrive apps. Don't have a Berks County Public Library Card? Get an instant digital card here:

Sisters Melati and Isabel Wijsen from Bali started their own campaign to save their island from plastic bags. They got stuck at times, but persevered and learned how to think outside the box! It's not always easy!

Sophie Cruz at only 5 years old was brave enough to give the pope a special message about her family about immigration.

What do you know about immigration and it's history?

How can we learn more? Don't forget to use these school library resources over the summer to read, research and grow!
