8th Grade
Science in OVSD will be adopting a new curriculum this year called Inspire Science by McGraw Hill. This curriculum is structured around the 5E instructional framework that empower students to ask more questions, think more critically, and generate innovative ideas through in-depth, collaborative, evidence-based, and project-based learning experience.
All instruction will support student mastery of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for California Public Schools by exploring four general units:
Unit 1: Change Over Time
Geologic Time
Natural Selection and Adaptations
Evidence of Evolution
Unit 2: Energy and Motion
Forces and Motion
Mechanical Energy
Electromagnetic Forces
Unit 3: Understanding Waves
Introduction to Waves
Light
Information Technology
Unit 4: Humans and Their Place in the Universe
Earth and Human Activity
The Sun-Earth-Moon SYstem
Exploring the Universe
In addition to the science content above, all middle schoolers are required by the State of California to be provided an opportunity to learn the Comprehensive Sexual Education (CSE). This year, CSE will be pushed out in 8th grade at the end of the school year. More details will be provided as time approaches.

I will try to get back to you as soon as possible but please don't expect immediate reply during the weekend and outside work hours
I submitted my online work 1 second after the deadline, does it count as late?
Yes. Unless you timely let me know of a technical or personal issue, an assignment is marked late if it does not get submitted on time past the deadline. More information about late assignment is in the class syllabus.
If you filled in the Late Slip correctly/completely and turned it into the "Late Work" bin, I will grade them as soon as I can. Please know that you need to turn in the slip for both paper and VIRTUAL/ONLINE late assignments.
My older sibling did the Comprehensive Sexual Health Education (CSE) in 7th grade couple of years ago, why are we recommended to do it this year when I'm in 8th grade? Do we have to participate?
It is a California law that every middle schooler is given the opportunity to learn about the CSE and it is not specific to which grade level. OVSD has shifted when we push out this content to 8th graders instead of 7th graders since the 2020-2021 school year. We will discuss this in much more detail at the end of the year (including about participation) but if you have any immediate question, please don't hestitate to ask me.
