History of the Paterson Hub & Harvest

The Paterson Hub & Harvest grew from a shared community vision to create a welcoming place where people could connect, learn, volunteer and celebrate Paterson's rich agricultural heritage. Following extensive community consultation during the development of the Paterson Community Action Plan 2025, local residents identified the need for a central community hub that would encourage social connection, food production, lifelong learning and environmental sustainability. The project built on the success of the Paterson Community Builders program, which had already demonstrated the value of volunteer-led community initiatives in strengthening resilience and bringing people together.

The concept evolved further in 2025 with the establishment of the Paterson "Pop-in", a six-month pilot community space funded through a Pace Farm grant. The "Pop-in", located at St Paul's Church Hall, quickly became a gathering place for workshops, volunteer coordination, community meetings, local displays and creative activities, proving there was strong demand for a permanent community hub. The pilot also supported the development of the Paterson River Orange Project, celebrating the district's historic citrus industry through art, storytelling and community events.

Building on this success, the vision expanded into Paterson Hub & Harvest, located in the former Gallery space at the back of the Post Office. it is a community-led space combining a volunteer hub, community garden, orchard, workshop venue and information centre. The Hub was designed to provide opportunities for residents of all ages to grow food, share skills, preserve local history and participate in environmental projects while reducing social isolation and strengthening community wellbeing. Activities include gardening workshops, youth volunteering, seed saving, sustainable living demonstrations, arts and cultural events.

Today, Paterson Hub & Harvest continues to evolve as a vibrant community asset. Supported by volunteers, grant funding and local partnerships, it has become a focal point for community participation, environmental stewardship and intergenerational learning. Projects such as the University of Technology Sydney Big Lift volunteer weekend, where students helped establish new garden areas and improve the site, demonstrate the Hub's growing role in bringing together local residents and visitors to create lasting benefits for the Paterson community.
