For our first official project, Youth Tellers voted to work on photography and portraiture with Vogue photographer, Robert Erdmann. We spent weeks developing how we wanted the project to unfold, in what way we wanted to give each other constructive criticism, and what topics we hoped to cover.
In the end we created a multi-part series on identity, starting with capturing places and things that represent us, our towns, and our stories.
“Dream like you will live forever, live like you will die tomorrow.” ☁
Jelena chose to highlight the following: music, drawing, reading, hot chocolate, food, nature.
“Some items that I think represent who I am are my camera, a good book, my favorite tea, and a pen and a notebook. I use these items daily, and to me, they play an important role in my life when building the person I am. My safe space is my home in general. It faces the sunset, so there is always light coming in no matter what time of day it is. It is the place where I spend most of my time with the people I love, and to me, my home represents safety, security, and love.” 🌞
“These photos summarize everything I like to do. I have always wanted to express my opinions and thoughts through the art form. Possibilities are numerous and discovering all these ways is interesting and challenging.” 🎻
“Let it tell its story. (Every single thing in this picture represents something very different, and all are a part of what made me who I am today. So all contribute to my identity.) The home of the arts. (This picture with the cup of wine is taken at my uncle's apartment in Boston, and he is as artistic as me and we share similar dreams. He is also my fav uncle, whom I always feel safe around.)” 📖
“1st photo: this photo means a lot of me because it represents my two passions: playing the piano and spending musical summers on a beautiful island. 2nd photo: These are my ways of spending my free time.” 🎼
“The first photo, taken in nature, with yellow grass, colorful trees, and endless blue sky with white patterns. It is somehow the place where I feel most comfortable. I often find inspiration for writing, even ideas, and make such cool pics and scripts. The second photo is my best shot of flat-lay photography. I intended to show you what my writing process looks like, so I use everything from computers, drawings, maps, crayons, pencils, what surprised some people is that I listen to music while writing. The music really helps me get into that mood of the script, of course, it depends on what is the script about. : )”🖋
"Cinematic Universe."
First Photo: It is infinitely large, and it makes me feel infinitesimally small, yet I always feel at home in the water. I feel most comfortable outside, immersed in our beautiful world. When I consider the Earth my home, and its people my family; the "blue" part of the blue planet feels like nothing less than a quintessential lifeline. Second photo: This is a nice summation of who I am, and who I want to be. I love learning how to really see (the binoculars), to think (books), and how to dream with my eyes open (catcher). I relish in every journey I take in this short life and I think travel, exploring, and learning are a will continue to be a fundamental part of who I grow to be."
