Small World Big Changes

The Challenge

What are the signs of change that come during early spring in your backyard?

Materials Needed For All Ages This Week:

  • Age Appropriate Journal or Notebook

  • Pen or Pencil

  • Household common items with parent permission listed in the activities.

Parent Notes:

This week we will have a perfect weather progression that will allow your child to experience the change that comes with Spring. Early in the week, we will experience cool temperatures with considerable clouds, wind, and precipitation. By Friday temperatures will really warm up and the sun will shine. Encourage your child to dress for all types of weather and get out to explore and embrace the moments this week as we look at backyard change!

  • These activities are a great start to help get your children noticing and learning what is going around in your yard.

  • Morning is best for observations. This may be a great way to get your kids up and going for the day.

  • Continue to observe what is happening from your prior week studies. My daughter's bird observatory is really starting to take shape. Additionally, encourage kids to continue to build or innovate forts and fairy or toad gardens.

  • Don't be afraid to get your kids started and let them go a bit. Or, you can participate with them if you have time.

  • By completing these tasks your children will experience math, science, literacy, and social studies all in nature. We have designed these to be grade band specific. Your child may move up or down with no problem depending on their learning needs or preference.

  • Most of all....Have fun and engage with your kids on their adventure, even if it is around the dinner table after a busy day.
