2026-27 School Year Internships
Fall Semester Internships
Description: Garden Steward Interns take care of The Center Instructional Garden under the mentorship and supervision of The Center's Garden Specialist Abby Lourenco. Garden Steward Interns perform basic garden stewardship including watering, weeding, transplanting, pruning, integrated pest management, fertilizing, harvesting, soil care (bed prep, bed amendments, composting, vermicomposting, etc.) and more. Being a Garden Stewardship Intern is an incredible way to learn about gardening and contribute to OUSD's School Garden Program.
Location: The Center (2850 West St. Oakland)
Schedule:
Dates: from October 6 - May 13
Days of the Week: Tuesdays and Thursdays
Hours: 12-3pm

Description: Garden Nursery Interns participate in The Center's Nursery Program under the mentorship and supervision of The Center's Garden Specialist Abby Lourenco. Garden Nursery Interns perform basic garden nursery tasks including seeding, potting up, transplanting, watering, pest management, pot washing, organizing & inventorying, and more. Being a Garden Nursery Intern is an incredible way to learn about plants and contribute to OUSD's School Garden Program.

Hours: 1-4pm

Our Summer Internships Were a Great Success!
We hosted 21 interns during June and July who collectively worked over 1,500 hours stewarding The Center Garden, preparing and serving meals grounding in the teachings of Samin Nosrat's Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat Cookbook, providing produce and crafts to the community at Market off West, leading elementary Field Trips and Taste Tests, leading Environmental Justice walking tours to community members and more!
During our summer internship we...
Harvested 60 lbs of produce
Assessed 5 High School gardens & drafted Garden Improvement Plans
Installed a new irrigation system at Hoover Elementary
Cooked 41 different recipes
Served 578 Meals!
Welcomed 291 guests to our Market off West
Gave away over 500 lbs of produce to the community (thank you Oakland Gleaners for supplementary our school garden harvests)
Lead 7 Field Trips serving 128 students
Facilitated 5 Taste Tests serving Stone Fruit to 347 students
Lead 4 environmental justice walking tours educating and engaging 30 community members
