In ECSE, we use SymbolStix icons unless there is a specific reason they won’t work for a child. Symbolstix is the visual language used by all OUSD special education programs, from early childhood through the Young Adult Program. This consistency prevents students from having to relearn new visual languages as they progress through different grades. Switching visuals based on teacher preference can confuse students and hinder their learning.
Therefore, OUSD uses Symbolstix district-wide across all grades.
Please consider this when selecting visual supports for your classroom.
ECSE teachers should have access to a Symbolstix account for creating visuals. If you don't have access, please inform your coach so we can resolve it
We love these because they were developed with inclusion in mind! They’re multilingual, they include Symbolstix icons, and you can add a photo of your own students--this means they can support all kinds of learners in your classroom. These icons are used in many ECE classes, and can help prepare your students for inclusion!
